Now or Never: Silent Hill and Gravity Rush Father Keiichiro Toyama talks in more detail about his departure from Sony

Japanese game designer Keiichiro Toyama, behind the creation of such series as Silent Hill, Siren and Gravity rush, recently left Sony and opened his own game studio Bokeh game studio… The developer immediately rushed to assure fans that his parting with the platform holder passed without any scandals or unnecessary drama – Toyama had long planned to try himself as a freelance writer

In an interview with a Japanese publication Famitsu Keiichiro Toyama spoke in more detail about his departure from Sony… As it turned out, one of the reasons for this decision was the fact that the gaming division of the company as a whole is actively shifting towards the production of very large games. Toyama decided that on such a scale, his creative vision was becoming somewhat problematic.

“It so happened that today, large console games are huge, expensive projects that compete for the attention of audiences around the world. My approach to development in such scenarios is not very effective, so [в вопросе создания собственной студии] I decided – now or never, “- said Keiichiro Toyama.

Zunya Okura, another veteran SIE Japan Studio and a close friend of Toyama who co-founded Bokeh game studio, confirmed that Sony’s structure has undergone changes, with the result that the company’s focus has shifted to the production of very large-scale titles. Experimenting and making edits has become more difficult.

“I have been working with Toyama for many years, so somehow I share his position. After the internal structure [Sony] has undergone certain changes and the focus has shifted directly from development to the development of huge projects in its scale, it became very difficult to experiment in the approach to creating new games. The same applies to the revision of any production moments, if circumstances require it, “added Zunya Okura’s thought.

Now Bokeh game studio is working on his first game – a mysterious adventure project with horror elements. Its release should take place in 2-3 years on all current platforms.

At the same time, Toyama is open to cooperation with Sony. If one day she turns to him with a proposal to work on the franchises that they managed to create together, like Gravity Rush and Siren, he believes that they could agree. However, so far all the attention of the new studio is focused on launching its own new multi-platform IP.
