New Gameplay, Caretgen Port, and Fresh Details on Resident Evil: Village with TGS 2023

Company Capcom gave a short presentation yesterday during the Tokyo Game Show 2023 Online broadcast Resident Evil: Village… After re-showing the recent trailer, the producers Peter Fabiano and Tsuyoshi Kanda began their speech with the story that the events of the new game take place several years after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Gamers will once again find themselves in the shoes of Ethan Winters, who is now “living peacefully with his wife Mia.” Fabiano and Kanda also mention Chris Redfield, but add that at the moment they cannot reveal more details about him. They then presented the game’s setting, which they described as “a desolate snow-covered village where all kinds of dramatic events take place.” The producers consider the village to be another main character due to its location playing such an important role.

They then showed an image of a humanoid creature with a wild look and torn rags together with clothes. They are described as fast and fierce hunters who can gather in packs. When not alone, they can coordinate their attacks, making them harder to defeat.

The producers say that even though the village is a hostile place, players will still face the civilians left behind. We were shown a picture of people in peasant clothes holding hands. What role they will play and how they will influence the plot, the developers did not disclose at the moment, inviting viewers to come up with ideas on this account instead.

Capcom also presented an interview with Peter Fabiano. Morimasoy Sato and art director Tomonori Takano, in which they reveal that Resident Evil: Village is a beautiful, yet frightening game. It is then mentioned that in the case of Resident Evil 7, Ethan was originally conceived as a kind of “stub”, a window through which you enter the game world, but later realized that it was important for the story to develop him into a full-fledged character. In the process, they began to ponder how the events of Resident Evil 7 would affect the hero’s life in the future, and so at a fairly early stage in the development of Resident Evil: Village, it was decided to make Ethan the main character for this game too.

Takano added that while the new part is very different from the previous one in terms of landscapes, they aimed to make Village as scary as Resident Evil 7, and maybe even more, including through a different approach to the implementation of lighting. Sato then stated that Resident Evil: Village is a little more catchy and a little easier to pull in than the previous installment of the series. He explained that it was all about the feel of the game, finding a balance between beauty, brutality and horror.

Despite the fact that the village is perceived in the minds of people as something very small, Sato said their approach was to make the game world evoke a sense of scale. To this end, they, for example, tried to make the mountain landscape around the village “as fantastic as possible” to create an atmosphere of freedom and scope. The art director discusses this further, saying that they want players to be surprised that they can actually get to the places that open up in front of them.

All of this indicates that Resident Evil: Village will offer a much more open world, and Sato added that the new game will give gamers a lot more freedom than in Resident Evil 7. The developers are aiming for gamers to experiment, plan and find more. their own ways of solving the problems that they have to face, as if they really were there. Peter Fabiano also emphasized the openness of the game, noting that the first-person perspective provides maximum engagement in the gameplay, from which gamers themselves will want to stop and explore all the local scenery. According to him, the only way to increase immersion is to “scan” yourself and immerse yourself in the world.

Further, the developers mention the children’s storybook, which could be seen in the trailers. Initially, they included many different plot points into the game, but then they became concerned that the players might not fully understand what was happening, which they, of course, wanted to avoid. So, to make it easier to understand, they decided to put everything in one storybook, which would summarize ideas that “will come together once the players have gone through the whole story.”

We also learned that while Resident Evil: Village is being created specifically for next-generation consoles and PCs, the authors are exploring the possibility of releasing the game on Xbox one and Playstation 4… The developers do not yet give any guarantees that the port for the carrentgen will eventually take place, but they promised to do everything possible so that in case of release, users of the current platforms will receive a top-level survival horror.

The presentation ended with an announcement of plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series next year. The franchise anniversary will begin to celebrate 22nd March
