Group “M. Video Eldorado“, the largest domestic retail company selling electronics and household appliances, summed up the development of the Russian mobile market over the past decade. We selected the main thing from the report.
- According to experts, in just the last decade, Russian users have bought about 400 million mobile devices worth about 3 trillion rubles.
- The graph below shows the dynamics of changes in audience preferences. In 2010, push-button mobile phones occupied 90% of the market, and by the end of 2019 – only 22%. It is curious that the total sales of smartphones in the 2010s turned out to be only 15% more than cell phones – 212.6 million devices against 184.6 million.
According to the head of the Mobile Technology department at the M.Video-Eldorado Group Vladimir Chaika, despite the availability of smartphones with a wider range of functions, for some buyers, button phones are still very attractive.
“They are in demand as an additional inexpensive means of communication or as the first device for children or elderly people. Digital ascetics are consciously choosing a mobile phone, which want to limit their time on the Internet and reduce their psychological dependence on technology. Of the advantages of cell phones over smartphones long working time without recharging, low price, reliability (the segment of shockproof and moisture resistant phones is actively developing. Button phones last longer, on average they change of five years, while the smart phone replacement cycle is about two years, which affects again high autonomy, resistance to breakage, as well as the absence of breakthrough technologies Worth more likely to buy your new device, “- said the expert.
- In the 2010s, smartphones completely replaced most people with such technical devices as music players, cameras, camcorders, navigators and e-books.
- In 2019, smartphone sales in Russia in 2019 amounted to about 30 million devices worth about 495 billion rubles, which is 1.5% more in units and 7% in money than in 2018. At the same time, the monetary volume of the market was almost twice as much as in the pre-crisis 2014. It was five years ago that sales of smartphones in quantitative terms for the first time exceeded the demand for mobile phones.
- Over the past decade, the technical capabilities of mobile devices have undergone significant transformations. The screen of the Samsung Galaxy A50 (the best seller of 2019 in Russia) compared to the Nokia 5230 (the best-selling in 2010) doubled – to 6.4 ″ from 3.2 ″, the resolution of the main camera increased on average to 25 MP from 2 MP, 3G replaced the 4G network, the built-in memory of popular models increased to 64 GB from 70 MB, the battery capacity tripled, slots for two SIM cards, biometric sensors and NFC chips began to be introduced in large quantities.

- Finally, the report says that by the end of 2019, demand for cell phones without an operating system in Russia decreased by 12% in quantitative terms and 18% in money terms to 8.4 million devices and 10.9 billion rubles compared to 2018. The most popular manufacturers were teXet, Nokia, Itel, Jinga and another Russian brand – BQ-mobille. Russians have been losing interest in the category of push-button telephones since 2012, however, in the M.Video-Eldorado group, sales show steady growth, in 2019 the positive dynamics was 13% in units and 8% in money. Moreover, push-button phones are bought 3.5 times more often than tablets and 70% more often than wearable devices.
Earlier, M.Video-Eldorado reported an increase in demand for consoles among Russians.
