Microsoft sued due to stick drift in Xbox controllers

On April 28, a class action lawsuit was filed with the Washington District Court Microsoft. The reason was a marriage Xbox Elite Controller, namely – drift device sticks.

Claimant Donald McFadden claims that many owners of the Xbox controller experienced problems, and this applies to a variety of models, not just Elite. Buyers detect a breakdown even after the expiration of the 90-day warranty, and must pay for the troubleshooting themselves.

The breakdown is as follows: the controller incorrectly reads the movement of the sticks and the character starts moving even when the players’ hands do not touch the controller.

McFadden complains that he was forced to buy a second Xbox Elite Controller, but the latter also quickly broke down. Three or four months later, when the controller became unusable, the plaintiff decided to fix the device on his own. After spending “a significant amount of time” trying to fix the defect on his own, including setting up dead zones in the Xbox system, he realized that everything was in vain.

McFadden claims that Microsoft is aware of the problem of drift sticks after numerous complaints from customers, but “hides the defect and regularly refuses to repair the controllers after it is detected.”

The lawsuit states that the fault is the potentiometer located inside the stick mechanism, which converts the movement of the thumb into the movement of the character in the game.

“A simple Google request provides a solution to this,” says McFadden. “There are many forums and posts dedicated to drifting. On YouTube even posted training videos from users trying to solve the problem on their own. “

A similar lawsuit was filed against Nintendo last year when Joy-Con owners discovered stick drift on their controllers. Last month, the lawsuit was upheld, as a result of which Nintendo stopped charging fees for repairing drifting sticks on Joy-Con controllers and began to reimburse costs to those who had already paid to fix the problem.
