Italian game portal Everyeye made accurate measurements of the volume of the cooling system Xbox series x and compared them with indicators PlayStation 4 Pro…
Test results showed, that when surfing the Series X dashboard, it makes noise at the level 22-26 decibels, which at a distance of one meter is completely drowned out by background sounds in the room and is in no way perceived by ear. At work Destiny 2 the console noise increased to just 26-31 decibels, with the range of values almost always remained constant, unlike the PS4 Pro, which indicates efficient heat dissipation.
For comparison, in the same game the PlayStation 4 Pro turned out to be much louder – in most scenarios, the console issued from 63 to 69 decibels… Somewhere, as, for example, in the social space, the noise decreased to 58-63 dB, and in some situations it increased as much as 71 dB.
Complete noise measurements:
- Room – 18-25 dB
- Series X in the menu – 22-26 dB
- Series X in Destiny 2 – 26-31 dB
- Series X when installing a disk – 40-44 dB
- PS4 Pro in the menu – 58-61dB
- PS4 Pro in Destiny 2 – 63-69 dB
- PS4 Pro in The Last of Us: Part II – 67-71dB
It is important to understand, however, that these are not universal data. The noise level values are highly dependent on external factors, but the difference between different devices as a whole should be more or less the same everywhere.
Xbox Series X previews surfaced online last week. Journalists praised Microsoft’s new console for its quiet cooling system, but some were surprised by how much heat the system generates as a result. In particular, the journalist told about this. Ken Bogard of Jeux Video on the french channel LeStream:
“Series X is hot, really hot! It doesn’t make any noise, but damn it, it’s hot! The console emits heat like crazy. It’s like a fireplace shaft. It can heat an entire apartment.”
He added that this kind of heating was only seen in backward-compatible games and when navigating menus, as the press currently doesn’t have access to optimized titles for the Xbox Series X.
The second person to also speak out about the intense heating of the Xbox Series X was the co-host of the podcast The Giant Beastcast Jeff Bacalar, noting that his console generates a significant amount of heat even in standby mode. He even burned his hand a little when he reached for the external memory card, but stressed at the same time that this was not a final sample of the device.…
“It looks like this thing is doing something while you are not using it that has to remove heat.”
Meanwhile, the launch of the Xbox Series X and S is just over a month away. Both consoles will launch on November 10th.
