Media: PlayStation 5 May Get Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) Support In December

Next generation console Playstation 5 may receive variable refresh rate (VRR) support in December 2023. Writes about this edition Playstation universe with reference to the words of the chapter Value Electronics by Roberta Zone

Based on a recent interview with Zone, the Japanese manufacturer expects changes to the CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) protocol, which is part of the HDMI interface specifications. Sony’s current TVs are due to upgrade to VRR in December, and presumably the PlayStation 5 may get VRR support at the same time.

“I discussed recently the long-awaited VRR upgrade in the X900H, X90 and X95 and all other 2023 TVs, and it’s still expected in December. Sony is awaiting an update to the eARC and HDMI specifications,” said the specialist.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) dynamically adjusts the refresh rate on a compatible display to match the in-game frame rate to minimize stuttering and screen tearing.

Sony previously confirmed that PS5 hardware supports VRR over HDMI 2.1, and after one of the future software updates, STB owners will be able to use this feature on compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR

It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series X has VRR support since launch.
