Amid scandals related to large-scale diversions of the adventure game The Last of Us: Part II from studio Naughty dog, many completely forgot that in early March Sony and HBO announced a television adaptation of the original project. Despite the fact that details about the upcoming series are now very few, in a recent interview with the Fandom portal Troy Baker shared his thoughts on the future show.
Recall that it was Baker who played one of the main roles of the gloomy dilogy – Joel, and although the artist is not directly involved in the work on the film adaptation, he maintains a very warm relationship with Neil Drackmann, a key author of the universe of The Last of Us. Moreover, according to the assurances of Baker himself, he is also a big fan of creativity Craig Meisin (“Chernobyl“), who is assigned to the project as a screenwriter.
“I’ve been passionate about Craig Meisin’s work for a long time. I’ve been following Chernobyl closely since Craig wrote. He’s like a rock star to other rock stars, everyone loves him. Later, I followed him on Twitter and he followed in response, and in the correspondence it turned out that our respect for each other is mutual.
What attracts me the most in the upcoming series is that in Hollywood there used to be a lot of people who realized the success of The Last of Us, but they looked at the game from the perspective of “if the audience likes it – you need to make a film”. But Craig has a different perspective, he approached the work as a real fan. For him it was important that as many people as possible were able to get acquainted with this universe. “
Further in an interview, Baker recalled his conversation with Neil Drackmann, where initially the question of the advisability of the series on The Last of Us.
“Once I asked Neal why should I even try to transfer this story to cinema or television? What if we have a plot that is difficult to convey beyond the scope of the game, what’s the extra effort? He then wrote the script for the film, faced with a lot of difficulties and answered me as follows: “The reality is that there are so many people in the world who for a number of reasons will never take their hands on a gamepad, will never pass our game, but for me it’s very important to tell them about Joel’s life and Ally. “
About the first attempt at film adaptation The last of us was announced back in 2014, the director was assigned to the project Sam Raimi, but in the end the film went to production hell, and the idea was unsuccessful. In an interview Troy Baker noticed that in his opinion this is even better, since the episodic structure is closer to the overall narrative of the game.
“It seems to me that the multi-part format allows you to tell the whole story much better. In trying to fit sixteen hours of playing a two-hour movie, you will not just filter the plot, you will begin to roughly cut it. In the case of episodes, there is room for action, you can take three or four seasons and adapt the entire narrative in full, thus bringing it to the end viewer even more effectively. “
Wherein Baker still sure The last of us forever will remain primarily a game, and no adaptations will be able to fully convey all the emotions from the original project.
“Ultimately, there are reasons why The Last of Us is primarily a game. You get to the winter chapter, see Joel losing consciousness, assume that he might die. And the next frame you see a cute bunny on white snow, which in a second it turns out to be pierced by an arrow, and here comes the understanding that now Ellie is all alone, move the stick forward, and get the impressions that video games can give you, and no other media.
Nothing can replace this. But the series has every chance of becoming not a bad alternative. With it, we can capture another audience, those people who are not attracted to lively interaction with the characters, “concluded Baker.
The Last of Us: Part II prepares for release June 19 exclusively on PlayStation 4. In turn, the HBO series does not even have an approximate premiere date.
