The indie scene has taken up the development of the metroidvania genre quite tightly. And if a few years ago everyone was doing first-person horror like crazy, now small teams are trying to hit the next killer Shovel Knight, hardcore JRPG or space rethinking of Souls games. New project from Japanese and Canadian studios Live wire and Adglobe Tokyo is another 2D Dark Souls style metroidvania.
A project with a long and poorly remembered name Ender Lilies: Quietus Of The Knights tells the story of the kingdom of Outland. In this world, “the rain of death” once poured from heaven, turning all living beings into the desecrated – terrible mutants and monsters. But the lost world had hope – in the depths of the church, the girl Lily woke up, who can cleanse the infected from the filth with the help of the power of spirits. A rather banal plot plot does not find an interesting disclosure in the course of the development of the story. Small videos about defeated bosses and notes do not add much to the desire to plunge into the surface lore.
Despite the fact that the girl has the power to purify, her main weapons are the bosses and mini-bosses defeated in battles. Some attacks allow you to use an infinite number of times, while others can dry out, requiring rest at a savepoint to recover. Lily begins her journey with a knight, whose sharp sword is able to inflict minor damage to enemies, later they will be joined by a village boy, a nun, a merchant and a black witch.
Big bosses reward the heroine with special weapons and abilities. So, the witch Elaine will allow you to dive and swim under water, the guard on the bridge will present you with a powerful club that can break vile meat membranes and flimsy doors, and with the appearance of a spear, you can break through walls. Naturally, new abilities offer fresh routes to explore, and it’s fun to discover them.
In addition to many opponents, there are treasures at the levels, such as enhancers of the abilities of spirits and artifacts. The former allow you to pump weapons and magic at all the same rest points, the latter strengthen the heroine by reducing damage or enhancing the magic of spirits. Naturally, artifacts take up space in your inventory, so you still have to separately download the number of slots. Some artifacts, like the counterstrike ring, do not take up space in the inventory, but this is rather an exception to the rule. The heroine’s health is restored with prayers, the number of which is limited, and their activation takes time.
The world of Ender Lilies shines in different colors depending on the zones. Here you can find gloomy catacombs, and green forests, and fields engulfed in flames, and Gothic palaces. Each of the locations has its own types of enemies, which can use combined attacks and joint attacks. Therefore, it is important to dodge and use the correct set of attacking spirits. And unfortunately, all sets are exhibited only at the resting place. While exploring the environment, it is impossible to change weapons or cells.
