Lightweight and Slim Workhorse: HUAWEI MateBook X 2023 Review

Company HUAWEI announced on September 10 a new model in its ultrabook line – MateBook X 2023, a much lighter version of the flagship MateBook X Pro 2023… We tested the new product and will be happy to share our impressions in this article.

The first thing to look out for is weight. The laptop weighs only 1,020 kg, which is 310 g lighter than the Pro version. At the same time, the X-variant retained all the advantages of the top model, such as 16 GB of RAM, tenth generation Intel processors, an LTPS matrix, a resolution of 3000 × 2000 pixels and the ability to reproduce 100% of the sRGB color palette.
The price in Russia has not been announced, but in Europe the model HUAWEI MateBook X (i5 + 16GB + 512GB) we received is € 1599. In our country, apparently, taking into account regional prices, the cost of new items will be around 130 thousand rubles.

Domestic users HUAWEI MateBook X will be available in four shades: shimmering silver (Silver Frost), deep green (Forest Green), starry sky (Interstellar Blue) and pink sakura (Sakura Pink). We got the standard silver version. Now let’s get down to the details.

PACKAGING AND DELIVERY

The MateBook X 2023 comes in the brand’s traditional flesh-colored box with a plastic handle. Inside is a premium white box with an iridescent logo, protected by cardboard frames, where the laptop is located in a packaging film. Two compartments contain a charger, a USB Type-C cable and a Type-C to USB 3.0 hub adapter. The keyboard is protected by a special transparent film.

LOADING

The laptop is started by the power key located in the upper right part of the keyboard and has the function of automatically entering the profile using a fingerprint. The setting of this mode is standard – about 15 scans.

The buttons on the keyboard are soft, uniform, distinguished by a scissor-type mechanism with a travel of 1.3 mm. The font is applied perfectly. The keys themselves are backlit, which makes working in low light conditions as comfortable as possible.

The webcam is hidden among the buttons of the upper sector, and it is generally useless – during conference calls, it shows the interlocutors your chin, and for comfortable communication you will have to hold the laptop with your hands. In addition, due to the low resolution, the camera does not support face recognition.

The touch panel is recessed into the body and has a pleasant click when pressed.

APPEARANCE

The laptop is made in a fashionable business style with a brushed aluminum alloy surface. The lid can be lifted with one hand thanks to the excellent screen hinge. It is rigid and does not flex. The laptop does not have a separate outlet for the power supply and is charged via Type-C. In addition, in order to achieve maximum compactness, the creators abandoned all outputs except Type-C. One can be found on the left along with a 3.5mm audio jack, and the other on the right. Slots are a little hard to enter, for example, when using USB sticks.

In normal mode, the laptop is very quiet – the noise level is below 35db. When playing music or watching videos, it literally vibrates in your lap due to the four super-powerful speakers. Heating in applications is almost invisible – the temperature of the case reaches 37-38 degrees. The MateBook X 2023 weighs just 1,020 kg, as noted, making it a leader in ultra-light ultrabooks. The screen-to-body ratio is 90%. The thickness of the device is 1.36 cm.

WORK AND TESTS

The laptop comes with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery (passport 41428 mWh) from the Chinese company Sunwoda, which makes almost all electric vehicle batteries in China.

When working in standard mode (browsing the Internet, reading, editors), one hundred percent charge will last for 6 hours, while watching films it will be discharged in 8 hours. We’re not talking about games.

The computer itself was produced in July 2023. Inside it is an Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz processor, two 8GB LPDDR3 SDRAM memory sticks with a maximum frequency of 2133 MT / s from Samsung, a 512 GB KXG60ZNV512G solid-state disk drive (NVMe) from Toshiba, traditionally divided into two sectors, an integrated Intel (R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz network adapter and a video adapter based on an Intel (R) UHD Graphics processor (1 GB). Realtek ALC256 @ Intel Comet Point-LP PCH – cAVS is used as a sound solution.

Screen – 13-inch (274×183 mm) JDI364C LTPS touch panel from Japan Display Inc. with a screen resolution of 3K (3000×2000 @ 60 Hz). The brightness is 450 cd / m2. Contrast: 1500: 1. There is no PWM, the manufacturer filters out the harmful blue spectrum. We did not notice any glare, the color reproduction is very natural, the screen supports 100% sRGB color gamut.

The 3: 2 aspect ratio makes it more comfortable to work with documents and spreadsheets. True, in the sun, the screen cover glares too much, so you have to turn the brightness to maximum.

In standard mode, AIDA64 shows the following temperatures:

  • CPU – 35 ° C
  • CPU Package – 34 ° C
  • CPU IA Cores – 34 ° C
  • CPU GT Cores – 34 ° C
  • CPU 1 / Core 1 – 34 ° C
  • CPU 1 / Core 2 – 32 ° C
  • CPU 1 / Core 3 – 34 ° C
  • CPU 1 / Core 4 – 33 ° C
  • KXG60ZNV512G TOSHIBA – 31 ° C

CrystalDisk Info tests indicate an average SSD temperature of 28 ° C.

The disk speed in Crystal Disk Mark was 3304 mb / s for reading and writing 2944 mb / s, which is quite fast compared to competitors. AS SDD, as always, shows slightly more modest values: 2469 mb / s for reading and writing 2168 mb / s, respectively. It’s very fast, but not for games. But the important thing to understand here is that the MateBook X 2023 is not a gaming machine. He, of course, can pull something out of simple games at medium settings, but you should not expect a miracle here.

Unigine showed 4 to 7 FPS at medium settings at 1080p. Final Fantasy XV Benchmark found the system unsuitable and gave it 577 points. In comparison, the MateBook D doubles the value with less video memory.

The MateBook X 2023 is good as a portable cinema with four speakers with separate frequency settings and highly accurate distortion correction.

The sound is deep and rich, and the Ultrabook itself, as I noted, literally vibrates on your lap. YouTube, working with Excel spreadsheets, surfing the net, watching movies – the MateBook X 2023 is just perfect as a workhorse. Although, due to the aspect ratio, the black bars will be slightly more noticeable when watching some videos.

Lightness, thinness and almost frameless screen are, of course, fantastic. Too bad the price bites. It would cost 800-900 euros!
