Kotaku: EA canceled starter project for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in Star Wars universe

Editor Kotaku Jason Schreyer reported that last spring the company Electronic arts canceled the planned spin-off series Star Wars: Battlefront. The project was codenamed Viking and was due out this fall along with next-generation consoles Xbox Series X and Playstation 5.

The backstory of Viking originates in 2015. Then Visceral games under the direction of Amy Hennig set about creating a Star Wars game RagtagHowever, in October 2017, EA closed the studio and canceled the project, the achievements of which served as the basis for the development to begin EA Vancouver A brand new open-world Star Wars game. This second title was called Orca and was in development throughout 2018, but was also canceled in the end. Because of this, a “financial gap” was formed, in an attempt to close which the Vancouver team began to spin up a smaller project with an aim to release it already in the fall of 2023. So in this whole series of events the third Viking game appeared, planned as a branch of Star Wars: Battlefront with the addition of open world elements.

EA’s plan was to connect the British Criterion games. When this happened, EA Vancouver had already spent some time developing ideas and prototypes, and then the difficulties began. On paper, Criterion was listed as a leading studio, but logistical problems caused by the remote location of the two teams complicated the task. Disagreements arose between the studios – Criterion wanted to focus on the plot and characters, while EA Vancouver had its own vision for the project.

It soon became clear that it would not work to complete the development of Viking in a year and a half, and EA management was not interested in extending the terms. The project was canceled in the first half of 2019, while the company has no replacement for this fall. Criterion is back to development now Need for speedand EA Vancouver helps major studios grow Anthem 2.0 and Apex legends.
