In February of this year was published patent claiming Sony working on a finger-tracking touch controller for the next generation helmet Playstation VR. Now, a video has appeared on the network in which the engineers of a Japanese company test a prototype of a new device.
The demonstration is part of a new research document entitled “Analysis of machine learning methods to determine hand position on a portable device with proximity sensor.” The authors of the work Kazuyuki Arimatsu and Hideki Mori of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The video shows a prototype controller, similar in functionality to those used in conjunction with Valve index. Sensors in the case determine when the user holds the device with all the grip or takes individual fingers to the side. External cameras, like Oculus quest, are not needed for this, and the device picks up movements well even on a sweaty hand. Rings and watches also do not interfere with the sensors.
Although nothing has yet been officially confirmed, it is becoming increasingly apparent that finger tracking will become one of the main features of controllers Playstation VR 2. Nevertheless, if the prototype gets to the commercial release, then no earlier than 2023. Sony itself previously statedthat does not plan to tie the release of a new VR-headset to launch Playstation 5. According to rumors, instead of a full update this year, the manufacturer will confine itself to a slightly improved model of the original helmet, especially since the current version PSVR will be fully compatible with the new console.
