It got better in some places, worse in some places – experts tested Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PS5 and Xbox Series X after the patch

On the eve of RPG action Assassin’s Creed Valhalla got the first big patch 1.0.4… It offered players a lot of fixes and several new features.

Now PS5 and Xbox Series X owners can choose between two modes: performance (dynamic resolution and 60 FPS) and quality (maximum resolution and 30 FPS)

Experts from Digital Foundry tested the game after the update and found that:

  • The PlayStation 5 version hasn’t changed much in terms of performance, but in the introductory segment it may sag a little more now than before. To be more precise, in the initial scene the experts recorded drops to 51 FPS, whereas at the start the game sank to 55 FPS here. The developers also changed the lighting a little.
  • Compared to the situation at the start, the opening scene on the Xbox Series X is perceived much better. The developers did a good job of eliminating the tearing. There are still tears in the frame, but they are much smaller. Most of the time the game runs in 60 FPS performance mode – even during night walks with a torch (initially, at these moments, “Valhalla” sank below 50 FPS).
  • To achieve such results on the Xbox Series X, the developers have lowered the lower bar of dynamic resolution, set by experts from Digital Foundry. Now the resolution on Xbox Series X in performance mode can drop to 1188p (at the start the game dropped to 1440p), while on the PlayStation 5 the bottom bar remains the same – 1440p.
  • On Xbox Series S in performance mode, the resolution can go down to 720p, but the game runs at 60 FPS (drawdowns and frame tears are only in cutscenes and in moments of night walks with a torch – up to 55 FPS).
  • In quality mode, the game outputs on Xbox Series S a picture with a resolution ranging from 880p to 1620p, and on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 – 4K at 30 FPS with drawdowns up to 29 FPS.
  • On Xbox consoles, there are still camera twitching during cutscenes when moving.

In the case of the PC version, the patch fixed the memory leak issue when using the Alt-Tab keyboard shortcut.
