“King’s Bounty: The Legend of a Knight”

One of the main “killer” Heroes “” Disciples got close to the legendary series, perhaps the closest. We have everything that gamers love HoMM for: exploring the map with collecting resources and searching for artifacts, interesting turn-based battles, pumping your own castle and developing heroes that are quite different from each other at the start. Plus, there are many factions in place, which differ both externally and at the level of unit abilities.

The devil is in the details, of course, and the first one is a unique visual style. Disciples are much darker and darker than the light fantasy “Heroes”. No less interesting is the fact that the hero develops here simultaneously with his subordinates, who do not go in stacks, but one by one. And each is valuable in its own way: someone imposes curses on opponents, someone heals his comrades-in-arms, and someone is capable of inflicting colossal damage. At the same time, for the development of the wards, it is necessary to properly build up the dwelling: each type of unit has several parallel types of upgrades that significantly change their future behavior.

Most often, Age of Wonders is described as a hybrid of “Heroes” and “Civilization”. From the first series, the role-playing component and turn-based battles on a separate field migrated here, from the second – an approach to the global map, rather reminiscent of 4X strategies. The series’ own feature is the magicians: they symbolize the player, and the final goal in the party is usually precisely to kill the enemy sorcerer. In the strategy, you can also found and destroy settlements, engage in terraforming, and, for example, freeze rivers so as not to use boats.

An interesting feature is also the addition of the world of shadows to the usual surface and dungeon: in a reality filled with dark magic, creatures move faster, but suffer from shadow ailment, which reduces health.

The creatures in the armies act alone and gain experience independently of each other. This allows you to create interesting combat situations: for example, one enemy squad can be attacked by several from different sides and use this as an advantage.

Many fans of “Heroes” consider Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic as the main competitor of the cult “troika” – even despite all their differences.

Remake of “Eador. Creation “first corrected the graphics, leaving the same essence. The player controls the Overlord, whose task is to capture the fragments to attach them to his empire. The gameplay on the shards is familiar: there is a castle, there are heroes traveling across a large map. Is that the territory here is divided into small provinces, which have to be captured during the game.

The seizure, by the way, is not always violent: sometimes you can negotiate, intimidate or bribe the one who now rules here. If it did come to a fight, you have to try. Local battles are somewhat more difficult than in the same “Heroes”: the army is influenced by morale and endurance, the terrain makes its own adjustments to the battles, and different types of attacks account for certain types of defense.

Technical flaws and weak graphics draw out an interesting story and non-trivial gameplay solutions. Many, however, the original “Eador. I like Creation better, but they are better suited for acquaintance with the series “Lords of the Worlds”: they are still a little more friendly.
