I rewrote the introduction to this text several times because I did not know how to approach the Resident Evil 3 Remake review. On the one hand, this is a good game, but on the other, it is very similar to last year’s “deuce”. It is still the same scary and atmospheric, but at the same time it is more full of action. There are still puzzles in it, but almost all of them have slipped into the banal “find the key to the lock”. Almost all Resident Evil 3 Remake consists of such contradictions.
I’ll warn you right away: in the original third part, I played only on YouTube, so there will be no in-depth analysis of how remake follows the canons of the franchise in this text. I will mainly compare the new-old part with last year’s Resident Evil 2 Remake, since this is the most understandable reference point for a modern audience. And here, unfortunately, for RE3 everything is not going very well.
Back to Raccoon City
Events Resident Evil 3 Remake occur in the same time period as the plot of the second part. In Raccoon City, a full rush begins: the dead roam the streets, some mutants and infected dogs. In this cauldron, sobriety of reason was only managed by an elite policeman from the S.T.A.R.S. Jill Valentine and Umbrella employee Carlos Oliveira. It is them who will be controlled by the players.
The story campaign in Resident Evil 3 Remake completely loses the second part. Now this is not a horror with elements of survival, but rather a shooter with elements of horror. We will mainly play for Jill, but Carlos will also receive several episodes of fame.
The storyline is straight through and incredibly short – I was able to go through it in six hours. And I swear, I was stretching this process with all my strength: I carefully examined all the locations, constantly returned to the already completed sections and opened the locked doors. He even died a dozen times, but not because of the tricks of the game, but rather because of his own curvature.
At the same time, the in-game timer takes into account only the time of pure gameplay, and the campaign has a lot of cut scenes, videos and small plot inserts. Therefore, I can add another hour or two to my passage, but this does not save the situation. How saturated are these few hours of passage?
Remember the enchanting police station from Resident Evil 2 Remake – a huge building full of secrets and locked rooms. There is nothing of the kind in the troika. The game is linear through and through, and you will simply not be allowed to return to areas already explored.
However, players are unlikely to ever want to re-enter some of the locations. A good example of this is the level in the sewer. In it, Jill needs to go through the collector, destroying all the mutants that can be destroyed only by throwing a grenade or shot in the mouth. You have to wait with your shotgun in your hands until the creature reaches you and opens its mouth, shoot and … repeat it over and over again – that’s the whole level. No riddles, no boss – nothing.
However, the RE3 story campaign has a fairly high replay value. This is greatly facilitated by the content that opens after the first passage.
“Why doesn’t he die ?!”
It would be unfair not to pay attention to the Nemesis in this text, since the monster is not as pathetic and helpless as the first remake players described it. He is much stronger than Tirana from the second part – he knows how to run fast, is able to jump over Jill’s head, blocking her path, and even pull her with tentacles.
In a word, the monster causes problems. One problem – he does it according to the script, only in those places where the developers planned it. No advanced AI, as mentioned in the preview, is out of the question. The Nemesis seems to be sitting somewhere in a cage and comes out only when Jill crosses an invisible line.
Such mechanics completely destroys the illusion of persecution, and in this regard, Resident Evil 3 Remake is inferior to both the original and last year’s “two”. But, as I said, the game is a rail action movie, and the current Nemesis is quite suitable for this format.
Especially good for the developers were bossfights. Several times the game will lock you with Nemesis in an open location and make you fight. Each battle will be unique, so you won’t be bored. Well, the final battle is so epic that it resembles an anime.
Rolls and Punches
Even in the demo, I noticed that the action in the game was many times more. Zombies now literally climb in batches, and some of them are difficult to kill even with a few shots to the head – in the second part, the enemies died much more willingly. Due to the increased number of opponents on the screen, the arsenal of the game has expanded slightly compared to the previous part. Jill can get a shotgun just half an hour after the start of the game, and Carlos does have an assault rifle.
At the same time, the arsenal still remained rather meager – to match the duration of the game. Jill has two conventional pistols to choose from and one heavy-duty Desert Eagle, a shotgun and a grenade launcher with several types of ammunition. Carlos has a gun and an assault rifle. Plus, both heroes can throw light and explosive grenades.
A key innovation in mechanics is dodge. If you press the button just before the zombie attack, then Jill will perform a spectacular somersault to the side and will be able to shoot the dead man’s face, and Carlos will smear him with his fist and push him away. Both methods are useful for survival, but you should not rely on them – the timing is quite complicated, and a misfire will cost you health.
What is the result?
If you expected to get from Resident Evil 3 Remake the same thing that was in the remake of the second part, then you will be very disappointed. If you played the original “troika” and want to refresh your memories – too. However, if you take all the shortcomings of the game for granted, you can sincerely get high.
This is a good game, but unreasonably short – and in this regard it is simply not worth the money. Rather, it looks like a big DLC to the second part. If Capcom promoted this remake in this way and asked for a thousand rubles for it, then I would have been delighted, but now I feel cheated. I do not recommend you skip this “troika” or go through it on YouTube, but I advise you to wait for the sale.
By the way, during the remake, I repeatedly remembered Resident Evil 4. After completing its storyline campaign, many additional modes also opened up, including Separate Ways – a separate storyline campaign for Adu Wong lasting about ten hours. But she was completely free.
- a great way to kill eight hours;
- The Nemesis is drawn in such a way that it will dream of nightmares;
- model Jill is exciting;
- the ending makes you scream “WOW!”.
- it is rather a DLC costing from 2 to 4.5 thousand rubles;
- the level in the sewers is terrible;
- few interesting situations and types of opponents.
