Fifteen years ago, only comic book fans knew about the Avengers. Now, on the contrary, it is difficult to find those who have not heard of Captain America and Iron Man. Against the background of such popularity, it is even strange that this team of superheroes is so modestly represented in video games. The situation is intended to be corrected by Marvel’s Avengers, but is it capable of joining the ranks of Batman: Arkham and Marvel’s Spider-Man, or is it just another attempt to cash in on a high-profile franchise?

The plot for the service game is like a shirt for the Hulk
One very significant plus cannot be taken away from the story in Marvel’s Avengers – it is. I understand, such a merit, but remember when you saw a game-service with a full-fledged campaign? With a plot that could be compared to stories in single titles – let The Avengers lose in all such comparisons.
The main task of the service model is to keep the user in the game for as long as possible. You don’t need a strong story to do this, and hardly anyone can write a script for a thousand hours. The finished plot even interferes with it – it puts an end to it, which is completely unacceptable for service games. So it turns out that in such titles, single-player campaigns usually represent something between training and a procedural-generated walk-through quest.
The situation is much better in Marvel’s Avengers. The storyline campaign lasts at least ten hours and boasts a set of solid cut-scenes and staged missions. And the story, although it received a wide open ending, can still be considered quite integral.
The only problem is that the plot cannot boast of anything other than the very fact of its existence. And if we evaluate it in the framework of single games, which the developers may have been striving for, then it will not cause delight among sophisticated gamers.
The story begins with a terrorist attack taking place during a holiday in honor of the Avengers. The villains want to blow up the Golden Gate Bridge, and while the heroes try to stop them, another trouble comes from the rear. The experimental reactor on the crew’s ship explodes and not only nearly destroys San Francisco, but also causes mutations in people, giving them superpowers.
The Avengers are accused of all this, because of which they have to retire, and their place is taken by the AIM corporation, which is led by a former friend of the heroes and also the creator of that very experimental reactor. But in reality, AIM turns out to be a villainous organization – it kidnaps superhumans, who were called non-humans, puts experiments on them, and then decides to destroy them altogether.
All this lewdness must be resisted by the Avengers, who are being reassembled by a girl named Kamala Khan. She also turned out to be an inhuman, and the approaching genocide worries her especially strongly.
Miss Marvel – a fan’s perspective of the superhero world
I must admit that the presentation of the story (or, at least, its main points) through Kamala is probably the smartest move by the writers. It’s not that she is a girl, teenager, Pakistani or Muslim, even if her religion and nationality were of great importance to the comics. All that matters to us is that she is a fan of superheroes.
Marvel’s Avengers is primarily aimed at fans of comics (or films based on comics) – respectively, they make up the widest part of its audience. Thanks to Kamala, discovering the game world and diving into it is somewhat easier. Well, because if I met Thor or picked up Captain America’s shield, I would squeal with delight in exactly the same key as Miss Khan.
On this, clever scenario solutions have exhausted themselves. Most of the other ideas look hackneyed at best, and sometimes frankly absurd. Why did people blame the Avengers for the reactor explosion and make its creator a hero? Why is everyone so advocating for non-humans to keep their abilities? This was understandable in the comics, but here no one knows the nature of mutations, and therefore the desire to study them and, perhaps, cure them seems a logical step, and not at all fascist.
However, if you do not think about it, then the storyline campaign of Marvel’s Avengers can be compared with a mediocre and not claiming to be an action movie, somewhere on the level of the second “Thor” or “Black Panther”. There is neither depth nor epicness, but there are fights, explosions and a lot of light humor.
In addition, it should be noted that Marvel’s Avengers is not too willing to pay attention to the characters, the universe and the whole lore. The developers, it seems, did not even admit the idea that the game would be launched by those who are not familiar with the Avengers and their world. Therefore, for fans, everything looks organic, but for beginners, the heroes in this universe may seem unrevealed and faded.
Captain America here asks you not to express yourself – in the same voice
Officially, Marvel’s Avengers is not directly related to any other work in the universe, and the story in the game is completely original. Despite this, traces of certain comics are quite easy to see.
The accusation of the heroes in an accident, the immediate cause of which they were not – “Civil War”. The heroes are in disgrace, and the villains are in power – the “Dark Rule”. Mass awakening of non-humans – “Inhumanity”. An attempt to make new mutants out of humans – all of the Marvel comics over the past ten years.
But it’s easiest to trace the parallels with the MCU. The backbone of the team is almost identical – only Hawkai is missing, but he will appear in the first expansion. In addition, immediately after the prologue, the time in the game jumps by five years – the same was in the movie “Avengers: Endgame”. And in the Russian-language version of the game, some heroes were even voiced by dubbing actors. So, in a sense, we were more fortunate than English-speaking gamers.
The influence of the MCU can be traced in small things like animations. Iron Man fires his repulsor guns in exactly the same manner as Robert Downey Jr. did on the screens. The same is true for Captain America’s battle stances. This is hardly a plus or a minus – just a fun detail that can attract movie fans, but gives rise to accuse the developers of copying.
Fly like Thor, sorry like Black Widow
Before the release of Marvel’s Avengers, the biggest concern (besides the service model) was the abundance of playable characters and whether the developers could handle it. Creating an interesting and deep combat system for one character is already very difficult. Repeating this five more times for characters with radically different abilities is something of a fantasy.
It is gratifying to admit that the authors of Marvel’s Avengers have done their job. True, as in the case of the plot, this can only be called a victory with some reservations. Heroes really feel and are controlled in very different ways – they have an individuality that not only brings variety to the process, but also allows you to choose a favorite among the characters over time. This is a real achievement for a game in which you can first be a god of thunder, and then switch to a regular (albeit very cool) spy.
You can be the Hulk – he hits the area hard and can heal himself. Miss Marvel (Kamala Khan) is capable of enlarging and stretching limbs, so she is as strong as the Hulk, but much smaller and easier to dodge attacks. Iron Man can fly and has three ranged attacks – perfect for social distancing. The Black Widow, on the other hand, can quickly approach enemies with a cable. Though Thor flies, he prefers to fight hand-to-hand, and he also has lightning and a hammer. Finally, there is Captain America – his shield is able to protect against any attacks.
These are not all the features of the heroes. Each, in addition to simple attacks and combos, has unique superpowers: conditionally passive ones can be a block, automatic dodge, or even a harpoon; support abilities in most cases are aimed at strengthening, protecting or healing teammates, and offensive abilities most often live up to the name. In addition, each hero has an “ultimate” – a particularly powerful move. Iron Man, for example, can wear the huge Hulkbuster armor, and Ms. Marvel can increase several times.
Considering the number of heroes, the variety of abilities is certainly pleasing. However, you can only play one character at a time, and it is at this moment that the weaknesses of the gameplay appear. In the end, all gameplay in Avengers boils down to a simple bitemap with blocks or dodges, depending on the hero. And in the case of Iron Man – to an equally primitive shooter. If you don’t constantly change characters, the gameplay can get bored very quickly.
Although there are a lot of enemies, they bring a little variety. Some fight hand-to-hand, others shoot, others wear shields that do not help them at all. Larger opponents rarely appear.
The bosses could fix the situation. But somehow it didn’t work out with them, which is surprising – the developers had an almost inexhaustible source of villains of all colors, sizes and shapes. They only managed to fish out three. Taskmaster and Abomination appear at the very beginning of the plot, in addition, they could be found in beta. MODOK is the central antagonist, you will have to fight with him at the very end. In addition to them, there are two more giant robots and a woman in an exoskeleton in the status of bosses, which are not so bad in terms of game design, but you expect more from a game tied to fan service.
Upgrades are needed not only for Iron Man
Marvel’s Avengers heroes have two stats – level and power. The first increases with experience and opens up new abilities. The second depends on the equipment, which can give bonuses to individual characteristics. As is customary in services, it is power that matters more, and the levels perform rather a nominal function.
Abilities for the most part do not offer something radically new. Some of them open up a new technique such as a running strike, others give various bonuses. After level 15, there will be switchable specialization perks. In theory, they should help customize the hero for themselves. For example, Iron Man can increase the effectiveness of rockets, lasers or repulsors. From the pros – perks can be changed at any time, from the minuses – there is not much difference between them.
Equipment performs a similar function. Some items can enhance ranged attacks, others – melee, others increase health, and the fourth – critical damage. A rare item can even provide some other bonus, such as a chance to restore health or stun an enemy on impact.
It is important to note that pumping, like collecting loot, takes place strictly for the active character. That is, playing as Thor, you get experience and equipment only for him. The rest of the heroes will have to be downloaded separately. Therefore, in the campaign, sooner or later you will have to participate in battles with practically “naked” heroes, and in the main mode – constantly replay low-level tasks in order to balance the strength in the squad.
Finished with MODOK, then what?
They say that in games-services, the real fun begins only after the completion of the plot. High-level content, freedom of research, social component and other marketing delights appear. In fact, this usually means overcomplicated procedurally generated quests, grind loot for completing them … well, and the social component, where can we go without it!
After completing the Marvel’s Avengers story campaign, you will unlock several new quest chains. They are divided into separate full-fledged missions and mini-quests from the “kill 100 robots” category. Technically, they are no different from most story levels – a vast location with several points of interest and a kill / defend / capture mission.
If you like the gameplay, then you will continue to have fun. If you put up with it just for the sake of the plot, you may not start the endgame. There is no serious scenario work here, and the monotony of opponents and locations will be a test even for the most staunch fans.
As for the grind, it is not difficult to knock out even rare loot here. The problem is that even the “rarki” in the Avengers are still faded. Yes, you will get lifesteal or stun, but fundamentally the gameplay will not transform. But this is a big problem! Basically, Avengers just doesn’t give you the motivation to hunt for rare artifacts. When choosing subjects, I was guided only by numbers. There is simply no point in choosing perks for your leveling or looking for some special buff here.
The outfit does not even affect the appearance – skins are responsible for it, which are mainly bought for real money. Considering that this is a service game, it’s even surprising how little the developers showed their imagination.
As with the bosses, there were a ton of ideas for skins to glean from the comics. Each of the heroes has changed many costumes during its existence, in addition, the characters have a bunch of different counterparts from parallel universes, etc. The developers just decided to repaint a couple of models – the game has as many as four looks of Captain America in sweatpants of different colors.
The only thing you can’t find fault with is the social component. Since this is not an MMO, but only a co-op, nothing large-scale was required from the creators – the ability to complete tasks together with other users was enough. In this mode, you can distribute roles and support each other in battle by choosing your favorite heroes. The only pity is that there is no special interaction between the characters – I would like to be able to combine our forces to perform some powerful blow.
Jarvis is not enough for this optimization
I would like to say that Marvel’s Avengers will be remembered for me by history or spectacular cutscenes, but the sad truth is that in my memory it will remain the most poorly optimized game for the PlayStation 4. I would like to believe that these are exclusively my problems or problems on the iron side. but The Last of Us Part II and Red Dead Redemption 2 behaved just fine under the same conditions.
Textures in Avengers do not have time to load while a cut-scene is in progress, the resolution of the picture is constantly dropping, and in intense battles, the frame rate also sags. I don’t want to start talking about the general “soap”. If you plan to play on PS4, I advise you to check the patch history before purchasing.
