Can Minecraft be considered as a platform for self-education? By my own example, I will tell you what positive skills can be acquired by playing the “sandbox” from Mojang, and also remind you why the school curriculum seems boring to many children.

I love experimentation, do you? As a little girl, I mixed soda with citric acid in a glass and enjoyed a violent chemical reaction. I calculated the required length for new curtains using a tape measure. In practice, I studied the use of a lever for moving a log in the forest. And I was looking forward to the transition to high school – after all, it is in the fifth grade that physics and chemistry appear on the schedule.

Unfortunately, these school subjects turned out to be not at all what many children imagine them to be. The only experiment that I remember ended with a “fashionable” pile – on my long hair, half of the class was magnetising a balloon. The rest of the time we just pored over textbooks, memorizing endless formulas.

Minecraft came into my life after graduation. It was this play that fanned the flames from the barely smoldering ember: I again befriended my inner experimental child. I could – both you and your children can.

Turning sand into glass and other real knowledge

Physics in Minecraft does not always correspond to reality, but some properties of objects can be studied. Attention to detail is important: for example, melting sand in a furnace, a player in Minecraft gets glass, and firing clay – ceramics. As in life. Considering that many children start playing Minecraft as preschoolers, this knowledge can really be new to them.

Minecraft sand and real sand

Minecraft recipes are almost always logical. Without even knowing how exactly this or that item is assembled, you can experiment with the ingredients on the workbench. Now the game has a built-in encyclopedia, but before, you had to google to get additional knowledge. This is long and not very interesting, and therefore it was always worth trying a couple of options first on a whim – even if I forgot how to make a shovel, it was easy to think of it, because this is a long stick and a knob made of the desired metal.

Dangerous experiments with dynamite

It is unlikely that in a real school laboratory you will be able to work with dynamite or lava. But in Minecraft, they are not as dangerous as in reality. My first encounter with dynamite took place at a temple in the desert, and I received two lessons at once. First, if you step on the pressure plate, it can activate the explosive mechanism. The character will die, lose all loot and end up at the respawn point. The second, historical: it is dangerous to plunder tombs with mummies.

Cause I’m TNT! I’m Dynamite!

On some Minecraft servers, dynamite is one of the most common security systems. If you climbed into someone else’s garden to steal potatoes, you may not leave the field alive, having stumbled upon a banner with TNT. If you find a seemingly attractive object that does not have an owner, then you should not touch it: perhaps the attacker wants you to be interested in it. All this sounds like a common truth, but on a subconscious level it works no worse than announcing the need to call the police after discovering an ownerless package in a subway car.

Redstone is the head of everything

The main source of energy in the world of Minecraft is redstone. These are wires for all experiments with mechanisms and at the same time their batteries. Redstone can be used to automate anything, it is also used in recipes for crafting a red torch, compass, clock, repeater, electric and pressure rails, and other mechanisms. With the help of redstone, craftsmen create realistic watches, roller coasters and other entertainment.

When you start exploring the possibilities of redstone in classic Minecraft, you grasp the real complexity of this children’s sandbox. Redstone circuits are analogous to electrical circuits in the real world. It is easier, safer and more economical to manipulate them than in any other laboratory environment.

If you deal with the classic circuits of current supply in Minecraft, there will be no problems understanding a good half of the sections of the physics textbook for the eighth grade. Direct electric current, alternating current, capacitors, Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s rules – remembering all this will be easier than building a huge farm.

You can learn how to use Redstone correctly either on your own, which is much longer and more boring, or with the help of guides. Minecraft videos on YouTube are both a meme and a phenomenon. With what love teenagers share knowledge with each other, write guides on different features and invite to play on their server! Most visited in the world of Minecraft already inferior other titles, but in terms of visibility still ahead
