The visual novel is a genre that is not widely popular in Russia. Many got to know him thanks to “Endless Summer” – a short story that plays on the feeling of false nostalgia and school romance. Cybersport.ru offers to look at ten short stories, the events of which also unfold during school years: some of them tell no less warm stories, while in others, the development of relations can turn out to be much more gloomy.

High school student Tomoya Okozaki is considered a difficult teenager: he rarely goes to school, and if he comes to lessons, he does not pay any attention to the teachers. He lost his mother in infancy, and relations with his alcoholic father do not go well – to the point that Tomoya received a hand injury during another quarrel. The guy is not particularly happy with his position and has long been thinking about the meaning of existence. Fortunately, while going to school one day, Tomoya meets a lonely girl. She quietly aloud repeats that the school must leave pleasant memories, otherwise it will be easily forgotten. And Tomoya, despite all his difficulties, decides to help the stranger to find new friends and pleasant memories, which begins a new stage in the guy’s life.

Clannad often pops up on lists of the best visual novels in history. The reason for this is a deep and interesting plot with a powerful nonlinearity (there are more than a dozen “good” endings only) and a high degree of player’s emotional involvement. Few people are able to complete the game and hold back tears – yes, the authors often slide into outright manipulativeness, but this does not interfere with perception at all. By the way, there is no erotic content in Clannad, although by all the rules it belongs there.

The Fruit of Grisaia (18+) – adolescent madness

Riki Naoe lost his parents in early childhood. To get out of a state of deep depression he was helped by “Little Rascals” – three boys and a girl, who proclaimed themselves fighters against injustice. A few years later, the gang decides to found a baseball team, but suffers from a lack of people. Ricky takes on the search for new members of a small gang. So “Little Rascals” are replenished with five more girls (in the Ecstasy version – eight), and a new period begins in the life of a company of friends, with its joys, sorrows and secrets. And Ricky, in the spirit of the genre, will be able to find his love among the new members of “Little Rascals” – and play baseball, of course.

Little Busters! slightly different from the other visual novels on the list: in addition to the usual reading of the text and non-linear storytelling, the user will have to play several mini-games ranging from the semblance of a fighting game to baseball and pistol shooting. At some point, the funny and kind story gets a darker twist, entering the territory of the drama, but in the best traditions of the Key studio (from which Clannad was already on the list) everything will end well. It is noteworthy that initially there was no erotic content in the game, but in the extended version, the authors nevertheless added it. Usually everything works exactly the opposite.

School Days (18+) – severe trauma of first love

The life of the protagonist is not particularly rich in interesting events: he gets up, goes to school and returns home. Most often, he is accompanied on the road by Sayori, a childhood friend who lives next door. It was she who persuades the guy to join the literary club, where, in addition to her, there are three more girls: restless Natsuki, calm Yuri and, of course, Monica, the head of the literary club. Together with them, the hero will have to know joy and sorrow, and there, you see, and experience the first true love.

For those who have played Doki Doki, there is no need to explain anything. For those who have not played, even more so: the game deceives expectations several times and turns out to be not at all what it seems at first glance. But to say at least something more in this case will be a spoiler. It is best to get acquainted with the Literary Club without knowing anything in advance – this way the effect will be much stronger.

If My Heart Had Wings (18+) – quiet romance against the backdrop of an endless sky

1983, a small mountain village of Hinamizawa. Keiichi Maebara recently moved here from Tokyo and is building relationships with new friends, by a lucky coincidence, turned out to be girls. There are few students in the village, so they all study in the same class, where the elders help the younger ones. So Keiichi joins a hobby club, where every evening he plays board games (and not only) with the girls. Calm and cheerful everyday life is interrupted at the Watanagashi festival: the locals honor, but fear the deity Oyashiro-sama, which has been killing people for four years in a row.

Higurashi When They Cry is a kinetic novella, meaning it doesn’t offer any choice. At the same time, the story is pretty confusing and stretched out into eight chapters, built on the principle of a time loop. In most cases, the funny days end with a bloody denouement with the participation of one of the key characters in the story. Despite the lack of interactivity, the chapters have complexity based on how confusing the narrative is this time around.
