How and what Dendi plays in Dota 2 matchmaking in 2023 – breaks up on Pudge and trains Storm Spirit

The champion of the first The International and one of the most famous players from the CIS in Dota 2 Danil Dendi Ishutin has recently appeared less and less on the radars of a wide esports audience. His B8 team missed the last two championships in 2023, and in the new year we saw only a couple of matches of the team in the closed qualifiers for the DPC. Therefore, Cybersport.ru decided to see what heroes Ishutin currently prefers in matchmaking and whether he has forgotten his signature Pudge.

Dendi is currently ranked 284th in the ladder and plays matches with an average MMR of 7.8K to 9K.

Hands remember how to throw a hook

Over the past week, Dendi played six times on Pudge. However, unlike Topson, Ishutin took him not to the center lane, but as a support for the fourth or fifth positions. Dendi won five out of six games, although we must admit that not all of these fights worked out for him in the best way. For example, in the match against Virtus.pro’s Nightfall, Ishutin was able to use only one successful Meat Hook on the lane, which made the lane look very weak.

But as a “five” Dendi sometimes looked much more confident. Crown hooks under the tower in the first minutes and further active actions provided an excellent farm for his carry.

However, Dendi should be given credit – he was able to return to the game after such an unsuccessful laning. Ishutin began to effectively move around the map and catch not only enemy supports, but also the enemy’s Ember Spirit. As a result, Dendi managed to win the match and get the MVP.

Quite often Ishutin was let down by his teammates: several times he ended the laning stage, making a couple of unanswered kills and getting ahead of the opponent’s mid lane, but other lanes were completely lost. In general, apart from that failure with Phoenix, Dendi really almost always emerged victorious from a duel in the center, having several kills and a higher level than his opponent’s.

Dendi tried

Ishutin’s gathering for Storm Spirit is almost always identical: Null Talisman, Bottle, Orchid Malevolence, Power Treads, BKB and Aghanim’s Shard. Even with a failed start, Dendi bought Orchid no later than the 17th minute and immediately began to actively work on the map.

Meta heroes in action

Recently he has trained Dendi and meta mid laners – Puck and Batrider. He has a positive winrate on both characters – four wins in seven matches and eight wins in 13 matches, respectively. Curiously, one of Ishutin’s most unsuccessful Puck games was again against RodjER, who this time came to the center lane at Grimstroke. Despite the successful laning and domination by level and creeps, Dendi couldn’t do anything about the game.

It’s a shame to start with such an account and end in defeat.

But in the match against Void Spirit, Ishutin showed himself in all his glory. On the fifth minute, he almost twice overtook the opponent in creeps, and on the sixth minute he killed the enemy carry. By the 16th minute, Dendi almost made a Rampage – the teammate on B8 Duster prevented, which killed the first opponent. You can see that Ishutin started this fight under the enemy T2 with only half health.

Dendi didn’t want to share the creeps

Although such a good start relaxed Dendi a little, and in a minute he paid for his impudence. Chasing Bloodseeker, Ishutin did not calculate that the enemy had charged Magic Wands, and Earth Spirit was already rushing to help him.

What about Dendi on the professional stage?

The last time we saw Batrider from Ishutin in tournament matches was five months ago – he finished that meeting with a score of 0/8/3. Probably in the second season, Dendi will take on this character more often. As for Storm Spirit, Ishutin did not play on it even longer – the last time was eight months ago. Apparently, Dendi decided to return this hero to his pool.

But it is probably not worth waiting for Pudge from Dendi in professional games. According to Dotabuff, the last time Ishutin played this hero in the mid lane was already in 2016, and the last four matches on him ended in defeats. Unlike Topson, Ishutin probably does not see Pudge’s prospects in the center lane, and he is not in a hurry to switch to a support on which he could implement the hero. So the famous Dendi Meat Hooks in tournament games, apparently, will not be seen soon.

On Puck Dendi played three times in the closed qualifiers for the DPC – and in the match against EXTREMUM he failed to show himself on this hero. It is curious that Death Prophet, on which Ishutin played both in qualifying and in the group stage, did not take a single week in matchmaking. He played only three games on Ember Spirit and Void Spirit.
