Hellblade developers for Nintendo Switch talked about the features of working with a hybrid platform

In recent years, the Nintendo Switch hybrid console has received some impressive ports from PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. One of the best quality steel transfers Dark souls remastered and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice from the Polish developers of QLOC.

In a recent interview for the Slovak Sector website, QLOC’s public relations director Milos Bialas talked about problems with the porting process and the biggest limitations of the Nintendo Switch.

Port Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice for Switch is definitely one of the studio’s most impressive work. When working on portable mode, the small display on the console allowed developers to virtually reduce the resolution, level of detail, and effects almost painlessly. In order to achieve a sane frame rate and stable operation of the game on the Nintendo Switch as a whole, the developers had to use pre-processed and pre-recorded cutscenes. Before QLOC conducted this work, when showing only Senui’s face, they were reproduced with a maximum frame rate of 10FPS.

Speaking of the hardware limitations of the Nintendo Switch, Milos Bialas emphasized that the lack of RAM, a slow GPU and media speed most of all prevented the porting of the game. Typically, in such cases, developers prefer to use lower resolution textures, but for games with open or half-open worlds, such as Hellblade, these restrictions seriously complicate the task. But such realities are only relative to porting from other platforms, since game development directly for the Nintendo Switch allows you to create assets based on console specifications.

According to the developers, despite the difficulties described above, working with Nintendo takes place in a welcoming atmosphere. The Japanese company provides detailed documentation and also sets clear requirements, which makes the development process smooth.

Last year the team Saber interactivewho was moving the third Witcher to the Nintendo console, reportedthat the original role-playing port worked with a frame rate of 10FPS. But thanks to various tricks, the final result was decent.
