Resource XDA Developers reports that in a future version of Android there will be support for “silent” updates on all devices, regardless of manufacturer. Previously, such a technology was already implemented by default on Pixel, for all other smartphones this was just a recommendation. But now, as reported, this mode will become the standard.
The idea is to use two virtual partitions – A and B. This allows you to update the system on one of them, while the second is in operation. Then, upon rebooting, partitions are swapped.
Note that with this approach, you can roll back the update if it was installed incorrectly. It will also allow you to install the patch even if there is not enough memory space.
A similar scheme already works on devices Oneplus, LG, HTC, Motorola, Google, Asus and Sony. And after the release of Android 11, their number is likely to grow. True, the release date of the new OS has not yet been announced.
