Editorial staff GameMAG.ru attended a closed online presentation The medium from the Polish team Bloober team and was able to chat with Jacek Ziboy and Wojciech Peyko – senior designers of the anticipated horror for Xbox Series X | S and PC… During the meeting, the developers showed us several gameplay sections and answered a number of questions.
Below we have written out the most interesting moments of the conversation.
- At the heart of The Medium is the exploration of detailed and gloomy locations with which users will interact using the unique abilities of the main character Marianne. The girl can directly communicate with the other world of spirits, as well as move directly into it, due to which the gameplay offers a unique mechanic – the simultaneous study of two parallel realities at once.
- It is on the interaction with the two worlds that many of The Medium’s riddles and puzzles are built. For example, trapped in an old elevator in the real world, Marianne can move freely through the spirit world, using her ingenuity in order to trigger the mechanism and save herself from an unexpected trap.
- At the same time, the world of spirits is a rather inhospitable place – it is inhabited by a variety of creatures, many of which are a real danger for the heroine. Marianne possesses a number of special skills that help her protect herself. For example, she can use a burst of energy to disperse obstructing flying creatures.
- In individual sections, The Medium offers subtle variation. So, fleeing from the especially terrible spirit of the Mouth (voiced by Troy Baker), the player can resort to several tactics at once – from trying to remain unnoticed to being able to distract the pursuer by outwitting him (the developers want the players to show their imagination and try different options).
- Despite the fact that a significant part of the plot is built around an abandoned hotel (the prototype of which was a real-life building made in the style of oppressive brutalism), in The Medium, players will have to visit other memorable locations. The same applies to the actors – there are more of them than it might seem from various advertising materials. The Bloober Team wants to keep some intrigue until the release itself, so The Medium will be able to offer a ton of surprises even for those who have followed the project closely since its announcement.
- Some of the main sources of inspiration for the developers of The Medium are horror films of the “golden age”, such as the classics Resident Evil and Silent Hill.… That is why the project contains a game camera with fixed plans, which is atypical by today’s standards. The Bloober Team experimented a lot with the virtual operator, especially considering the mechanics with two parallel worlds, but at some point they finally settled on the idea of fixed angles. They hope that this approach will allow The Medium to have a unique face, create the right tone, and also appeal to those users who are not at all familiar with the cult horror franchises Capcom and Konami.…
- The aforementioned Silent Hill is generally one of the key landmarks in the development of The Medium. The Bloober Team especially strongly identifies their game with the second part of “Silent Hill”, building subtle and complex parallels. Taking inspiration from the emotionally complex and multi-interpretable story of James Sunderland, the authors of The Medium hope to create a similar story – multi-layered and leaving players with long-lasting and deep impressions…
- Two composers are responsible for the musical accompaniment of The Medium – Arkadiusz Reikovsky from the Bloober Team and the legendary Akira Yamaoka, who defined the sound of Silent Hill throughout the history of the franchise. Both musicians worked closely enough to exchange materials and ideas about the sound of the upcoming game. At the same time, it was the Bloober Team specialists who were responsible for the sound design – Yamaoka participated exclusively in the creation of the soundtrack compositions…
- Now the developers from the Bloober Team cannot say with certainty in which direction the studio will develop after the release of The Medium. The project is a complete and integral creation, but this does not mean that in the future the authors will not want to return to this universe again. At the same time, the creators said that in their future projects they want to experiment more with the gameplay – to come up with games that offer more interactivity and interesting gameplay mechanics.
