The novel was released in 1982, then King wrote it under a pseudonym Richard Bachman… The plot tells about the gloomy America of the future, where society is completely mired in violent entertainment, including all kinds of programs.
One of them was The Running Man, in which members of the slums hide from killers for a month in order to receive a super prize. The main character enters into a dangerous competition to find money for the treatment of his little daughter. But an additional problem is that during the lifetime of the game, it never had a winner.
The story already had a film adaptation in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role, but it has departed significantly from the original source.
The new film will be closer to the original, with Wright directing the film and screenwriting by Michael Bacall (Macho and the Nerdy). Wright talked about his interest in the novel back in 2017.
