According to Anthem executive producer Christian Daly, the decision was made based on two key factors – the difficulty of the global pandemic and the desire to focus on other projects of the studio.
“Making games is difficult, as is making decisions like this. From now on, we need to focus our efforts as a studio and improve the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect, while continuing to develop Star Wars: The Old Republic.“.
Anthem’s relaunch, also known as Anthem 2.0 or Anthem Next, was BioWare’s attempt to fundamentally rewrite the original – improving the mission structure, equipment system, loot, endgame, rewards, and more.
As EA’s internal studio head Laura Mealy notes, Anthem was “creatively risky,” and she taught the developers a lot – especially when it comes to production planning.
Notably, EA planned to support Anthem for 10 years.
