Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournaments may change registration – Gabe Newell

Director of company Valve Gabe Newell admits that, against the backdrop of a global pandemic, all upcoming major esports events in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 can be transferred to the territory New Zealand, where the industry figure himself lives and works now. The reason for this reshuffle is, of course, the ongoing global pandemic.

New Zealand is one of the least affected countries from the coronavirus. The number of cases per day there very rarely exceeds 10 people.

Newell is convinced that there is no place in the world safer than New Zealand for large and crowded events.

“I just can’t predict where and when public tournaments can be safely organized, I can’t even imagine. But at the same time, I can say with a great deal of confidence that it is feasible in New Zealand,” explained the head of Valve.

The industry veteran also once again shared his thoughts on the idea of opening a new Valve office in New Zealand and transferring part of the company’s staff there. Newell finds this idea attractive, but does not want to make hasty decisions, given the instability of the entire situation. He had not seen most of his colleagues in person for over a year.

Valve is now actively working. The company launched a VR flagship last year Half-Life: Alyx, and today, according to rumors, is engaged in a number of secret projects.
