The film “Suicide Squad” released in 2016 (Suicide squad) has become a symbol of incompetence Warner Bros. and a very bad joke. To the director’s vision David Ayer initially there were many uncomfortable questions, but panicking after failure “Batman v superman“the producers tried to catch on to the success”Deadpool“, instructing the people responsible for one of the trailers to remake the final version of the film. The result is a Frankenstein monster, made for some unknown person.
All the more surprising is that later the studio not only issued carte blanche James Gunn, instructing him to restart the “Suicide Squad”, but practically did not interfere in the production process. In turn, the director decided to show the middle finger. Disney, who tried to “cancel” it for pedophile jokes on social networks.
As a result, we have the strongest film comics of 2023, which does not try to jump over its head, offering viewers entertainment for a couple of hours. Attention, there are spoilers!
The basis, however, has not changed. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) leads the project Task force x, which recruits villains from DC MCU… In exchange for shorter sentences, they are sent on suicide missions. In order to prevent possible riots and desertion, a small bomb is implanted into the head of each member of the penal battalion.
The new task for the “Suicide Squad” is to infiltrate the territory of the Latin American island state in order to destroy the project “Starfish“behind which the work on the study of an alien organism is hidden Starro… To increase the odds, Waller creates two squads. The first one is almost immediately allowed to be minced, which gives a chance to parachute without problems for the main team, which is headed by Bloodsport (Idris Elba).
The first thing you notice when watching a movie is the music. If in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, the audience was stupidly bombarded with popular compositions every few minutes, then Gann handles the material much more carefully, due to which there is no feeling of a wild krinzh. He also refused to stick to the grimness of the original work, which took itself too seriously given the input.
The very concept of “Suicide Squad” has always been the setting for outright trash. And Gunn understands this very well, sometimes giving out scenes of the film adaptation level “Titan attacks“.
He also knows how to work with exposure without overloading the viewer’s brain with unnecessary information. But at the same time, even the minor characters turned out to be very colorful and memorable. So, the director continues to mock his brother Sean, giving him the role of an anthropomorphic weasel, which almost at the beginning of the film goes to the bottom.
The narration itself turned out to be as smooth as possible. The heroes have a clear main task and several side missions, and at the end of the tape there is a climactic battle. This is especially noticeable in contrast to the original “Suicide Squad”, from which they literally ripped straight pieces of the plot. As a result, the stakes are gradually raised, so that in the end there will be a final battle with Starro, who is in the style of Godzilla is blowing away the whole city.
It is worth noting that the film tries to fulfill its R rating as much as possible, but the meat grinder is served in a deliberately trashy version in order to entertain the viewer. Gunn can do it, because the studio school Troma Entertainment hard to drink. At the same time, much attention is paid to combat scenes in which nothing flickers.
The main emphasis in the story is placed on the relationship of the team, although there are certain nuances. No matter how Idris Elba denies, in reality he replaces Deadshot… Hochma is that Elba plays much better Will Smith, from whose sad face in the first film the milk could turn sour.
Elba organically complements John Cena… His Peacemaker is almost a complete analogue of Bloodsport. The only difference is that in order to complete the task, the Peacemaker is ready to make any sacrifices, on which their rivalry in the squad is based.
Margot Robband continues to shine in the role Harley quinn, and Gunn is working on the image of the emancipated Harlequin girl much better than it was in the mediocre “Birds of prey“. BUT Yuelle Kinnaman in an interview with reporters, he did not even hide that he was playing a completely different version of the commander of the “Suicide Squad” Rick Flag… However, the main attention is still drawn to the members of the squad.
Daniela Melshior looks organically in the image Pied Piper 2 – a sleepy millennial girl, capable of managing an army of rats and serving as the conscience of the squad. His Polka Dot Man – not a villain, but a victim of the tyranny of her own mother, who infected her children with an alien virus to make them superheroes.
The squad has a Shark King as a mascot Nenue… Everything is simple here – this is another Groot from “Guardians of the Galaxy“, only this time his childish spontaneity is mixed with the instincts of a predator, ready to devour even partners. Again, in the voice acting Sylvester Stallone!
James Gunn was not too lazy to even register the team’s analysts who sit in the same office with Waller and coordinate the actions of the penal battalion. This is in great contrast to Ayer’s film, where the head of the project simply let all his subordinates go to waste. Obviously, in the series “Peacemaker” for HBO Max they will play an important role.
At the exit “Suicide Squad 2: Mission Knockout“(The suicide squad) turned out to be the smoothest and most memorable movie comics of 2023. Naturally, it does not pretend to be a masterpiece for all time, however, it fits perfectly into the concept of entertainment for one evening and does not leave that unpleasant aftertaste that fresh products from Marvel…
The only problem is that in the realities of 2023, such a film cannot recoup its budget, which is estimated at about $ 260 million. There is a lot to blame for the failure, but it is clear that the era of billion-dollar blockbusters is slowly becoming a thing of the past.
