“Demand is unprecedented”: Sony predicts record annual sales of PlayStation 5

Next fiscal year Playstation 5 will sell over 22.6 million units, predicts Sony Interactive Entertainmenttaking into account the current “unprecedented demand”. This will allow the company to break its own record for annual sales of PlayStation stationary consoles, which has been held by the first PlayStation for more than 20 years.

Best Years of PlayStation Consoles in Sales:

  1. PlayStation (fiscal 1998) – 22.6 million
  2. PlayStation 2 (FY 2002) – 22 million
  3. PlayStation 3 (fiscal 2010) – 14.4 million units
  4. PlayStation 4 – (FY 2016) – 20.0 million units

  • In the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2023, Sony hopes to sell more than 14.8 million PlayStation 5 units – more than the PlayStation 4 sold in its first full 12 months.
  • If the company manages to sell more than 22.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the next fiscal year, then by March 31, 2023, the total circulation of the platform will reach ~ 45 million

At this stage, Sony is limited by a shortage of components for the production of the PlayStation 5. New shipments of consoles are still immediately sold out all over the world.
