Days Gone Creator: Buy games for full price or don’t complain afterwards that there is no sequel

Days Gone Creative Director and Writer John Garvin stated that if gamers like a particular game, they should buy it at full price, rather than wait for sales or giveaways on subscription services such as Playstation plus

Garvin shared the corresponding thought on a fresh stream with the creator of the original God of War David Yaffewhere he was asked if he heard anything about “significant upsurge of interest” in Days Gone since it was added to PS Plus Collection on the Playstation 5

“I have an opinion on what might interest your audience, but it might piss off some of it. If you like the game, buy it for the full ***** price. You have no idea how many times I’ve heard gamers say : “Yes, I bought it at a sale or got it through PS Plus.”

In his opinion, gamers should not complain about the lack of a sequel if the original game did not receive proper support at the start

“I mean, it’s not worth complaining if the game doesn’t get a sequel because it wasn’t supported at launch. It’s like [упрек]that God of War got million-dollar sales at launch, but Days Gone didn’t. But I just say this on my own behalf as a developer and do not work for Sony, so I don’t know what are [реальные] figures “.

Former developer Sony bend also commented on the problem of piracy, due to which the shooter suffered at one time Siphon Filter: Dark Mirrorreleased on PSP in March 2006. Then, from one of the torrent sites, 200,000 illegal copies of the game were downloaded, which greatly infuriated Garvin.

“I can tell you that when we were working on Dark Mirror, we were very ***** with this game, because piracy was a problem at the time, but Sony was not particularly interested in how it affects sales.” …

“We showed them torrents. One torrent site downloaded 200,000 copies of Dark Mirror. The numbers may not be accurate, but I was still pissed off about it and felt like ‘this money [украли] out of my pocket “”.

In another part of the four-hour stream, Garvin confirmed that his leaving Bend Studio has nothing to do with the production of Days Gone or its canceled sequel… It’s all about the breakdowns that Garvin arranged because of the great responsibility to the team.

“It was a hard, long development process that lasted six years, and I spent all six years in crunches. But here’s the thing – I love working as crunches. I love what I do, so it doesn’t really matter, but that doesn’t mean that this pace is good [сказался] on me. The last two years I have spent away from the studio have actually been bliss. I could get up and do what I want. I’ve written three books and that’s a whole different story. “

“When you are in the process of creating [игры] is always the continuous pressure associated with milestones, profitability and personnel management. And to be honest, in the end it all boiled down to the fact that we had a few heated arguments about this in the last year or so. I ended up yelling and saying something like “just give me the bag so I can get the fuck out of here.”

Back when Chris Reese and I [главой Sony Bend] worked in a very small studio, so hot [атмосфера] was the norm, but as soon as it grew to a team of 100 people, it is not permissible for one of the leaders to lose his temper, you know?

Later in an interview, Yaffe tried to clarify these words and found out that Garvin’s dismissal is due to his “destructive personality”, which has ceased to fit Sony in the face of an enlarged team and increased risks

“Reading between the lines, it’s possible to assume that you were fired from Bend because you were a destructive person. personality is no longer suitable for the company [Sony]… Do you agree with this?

“Definitely,” Garvin replied.
