Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time on PlayStation 5 – What’s Changed?

New generation consoles are backward compatible with their previous iterations, however many projects with Playstation 4 and Xbox onerunning on the latest hardware often run with noticeable limitations. Initially Crash Bandicoot 4 output the image exclusively in 1080p on all versions of consoles, which looked unclear on modern 4K TVs. However, given the increased power Playstation 5 and Xbox series x, developers from Toys for bob have decided to release a full update to support next generation systems, including Ultra HD resolution and several other improvements. Owners of versions for PS4 and Xbox One can upgrade to the new hardware for free. We’ve reviewed the PlayStation 5 version.

For starters, it’s worth mentioning that transferring saves from the old version to the new one is possible through a special option inside the game. There is one funny feature in this moment: if you have some trophies knocked out on your PS4, then after the transfer of the saves, they will again fall on you, but already in a separate list under the PS5. Achievement hunters should be happy with this double bonus.

Now let’s move on to more noticeable and useful innovations. Initially, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time had a nice picture with good stylization, cartoony, but smooth animations and high-quality special effects. By adapting the platformer for 4K screens, the developers were able to improve the image, making it clearer and smoother. At the levels, almost no ladders or muddy textures are noticeable, and the project produces a stable 60 frames per second. Playing Crash Bandicoot 4 like this has become much more enjoyable. In some places it seems that we are in front of a CGI cartoon.

As for the sound, the difference in this aspect can be felt in headphones or with good acoustics, but it is not so noticeable on my TV speakers. To appreciate all the necessary nuances, I put on a headset Playstation platinum and alternately launched the PS4 version first, and then the PS5 version. According to my impressions, the quality of the audio stream in the version for the new console from Sony has become clearer and more spaced. The sounds of various moving elements in the scenery, as well as the actions of various opponents, have become not only accented from a certain side, but also seem to be cleaner. This is clearly seen in the background music. The difference is about the same as if you listen to the same song first in MP3 128 kbps format, and then in MP3 320 kbps. In general, such a difference may seem insignificant to some users, but lovers of good sound will definitely enjoy the increased quality.

There are also less noticeable improvements. For example, the developers have worked on downloads. In the original, they did not seem to me long, so at the beginning of testing I did not see much difference, because I wanted them to take no more than a couple of seconds, as in the same Demon’s Souls, but here they are still a little longer. However, the difference in speed becomes obvious if you start the level first on the old version of the game, and then immediately on the new one.

The developers also tried to use newfangled triggers DualSensehowever, apparently, they did not come up with anything better than to connect the resistance of the R2 button with the abilities of secondary heroes such as Cortex’s blaster or Tona’s harpoon. Far from the most impressive use of this feature, but the original concept of the gameplay, apparently, did not involve such experiments.

Another feature of the PlayStation 5 version is the support for cards from the main menu of the system. She’s not as thoughtful as the aforementioned Demon’s Souls or Sackboy: A Big Adventure. There are no useful tips or anything like that, but if you are on the global map, you can instantly move to the specified level. Apparently, the selection of levels in the cards is based on the principle of the least number of completed tests, although personally for me it would be much more convenient if the system offered to go through those episodes in which I had the least number of tasks left to complete.

Summing up, I would like to note that the main task of the new version of the project is to adapt the platform game for 4K screens, and the developers did an excellent job with it. In addition, Toys for Bob unexpectedly delighted with their attention to sound. Otherwise, it’s still the same wonderful adventure, a detailed review of which you can read on our website… If you love platformers and for some reason haven’t played Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, then now is the time. High-quality platformers worth 9 points are worth their weight in gold today.
