Eurogamer technicians from the team Digital foundry reviewed a recent reprint of the collection BioShock: The Collection for Switch.
Unlike Dark Souls: Remastered, where the original game was actually ported to the Nintendo hybrid, the BioShock: The Collection port is the same version that was released on the current generation. The texture quality is lower than on the Xbox One X, but the reissue for Switch thanks to all the other improvements still looks more advantageous compared to Xbox 360. The only real compromise as such is frame rate. While on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the compilation was adapted at 60 frames per second, on Switch the top bar is 30 FPS.
All three games work in 1080p in the dock and 720p in a portable. For greater smoothness, the resolution dynamically scales depending on the complexity of the scenes, from which in the first two games it can drop to 972r during hot shootings, while in the more complex BioShock: Infinite, the minimum bar is 810p.
There are minor problems with frameasing, but in general all three games show stable 30 FPS, both in the dock and in the portable. Dynamic resolution and halved frame rate reduce the load on the processor, but the developers still had to go to forced cuts in other places, since they are not too intrusive. This applies to the quality of reflections, the level of detail in the distance and shadows, plus a poor quality of anisotropic filtering of textures is noted, but the latter applies to all console remasters.
Digital Foundry Conclusion: y Virtuos it turned out to be an excellent re-release of classic hits, which offers something that none of the other consoles can give – portability.
