Amid growing intrigue around the details regarding the technical features and capabilities of the new generation consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X portal GamesIndustry spent together with companies ISFE and Ipsos MORI’s GameTrack a thematic survey among ordinary gamers in order to find out what they most expect from the new console hardware.
8,000 players aged 11 to 64 from the UK, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy participated in a survey. Some of these users play exclusively on consoles, while the rest – on a variety of devices.
As it turned out, the most important aspect in the systems of the new generation, gamers consider “good graphics” – they voted for it 68% all respondents. In the group of exclusively console gamers, the graphics received 71% votes.
Also, users want downloads to be faster – this aspect seemed very important to 63% interviewed and 71% console gamers in particular.
The survey organizers asked the participants to name the most important points for them from a pre-prepared list. Users could vote for several answers at once.
The journalists were especially surprised by the rather high demand for motion controllers – it seemed that the boom had already passed. But now these gamepads are used including for VR.
The rest of the survey results were arranged in the following order (the first figure is the result of a vote on the importance of the function among all gamers surveyed, the second among exclusively console gamers):
- 8K resolution – 40% and 49%
- Motion controllers – 49% and 57%
- backward compatibility – 48% and 59%
- Disk support – 47% and 58%
- The ability to stream – 44% and 51%
- Availability of non-gaming applications – 41% and 52%
- VR support – 37% and 43%
- Portability – 38% and 45%
On the ResetEra forum, in the topic news, they decided to conduct their survey among the core audience about the most important features of non-x-ray consoles. The results were as follows (players could also vote for a few points; 1,395 people took part in the survey):
- Improved frame rate (higher and more stable frame rate per second / performance) in games – 67.2%
- Fast downloads – 65.1%
- Backward compatibility – 56.8%
- Better Graphics – 53.3%
- Advanced VR technology – 17.8%
- Motion control and / or portability – 8.3%
- The ability to stream games – 6.4%
Commenting on the portability aspect, many note that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will still not have full-fledged Nintendo Switch hybridity, so the point is pointless. Microsoft will bet on streaming games from the cloud, and Sony will surely follow it.
