Are you satisfied, Greta Tunberg? SEGA Europe switches to cardboard packaging for PC games

European division Sega decided to completely abandon the use of plastic DVD-boxes in the production of discs for PC-games. This was reported by company representatives.

Publisher acknowledged successful experiment with Football Manager 2023. The game went on sale in the fall of 2019, but players could only buy discs in boxes that are made from 100% recycled cardboard. Shrink film made of low density polyethylene is used as packaging, and the instruction consists of 100% recycled paper.

On each copy, SEGA allegedly saved about 55 grams of plastic, and together – about 20 tons. Logistics costs also decreased due to the reduced weight of the goods.

Next week will go on sale in Europe Total War: Rome II – Enemy at the Gates Edition, which will also be distributed in cardboard boxes. Changes will affect all future games from the studios Relic, Two point, Sports interactive, Creative assembly and Amplitude studios. As for the American editions of PC games, only digital copies are available for purchase.

SEGA Europe also commented on the situation with console editions of projects. According to the company, it cannot independently change the boxes for games coming out on the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, because there are tough recommendations from platform owners.
