Company Netflix quite actively orders projects in different countries of the world, from Finland to Spain and Japan. Fresh TV action from the director Shinsuke Satofamous for his live adaptations Death note, Bleach and Inuyashikias well as the super successful Korean drama “Kingdom”Brings popular Japanese manga to the small screen.
At the center of Alice’s story are three friends – Arisu, Karube and Chota. After a little prank, they were forced to hide from the police in the toilet of Shibuya, and a few minutes later found themselves on the streets of a completely transformed Tokyo. In this parallel world, there is no electricity, all high-tech devices are out of order, and busy streets have turned into expanses for emboldened animals. Rare people here have day visas, for which they need to participate in brutal survival games. The losers, as well as those who have expired their visas, will be killed instantly by a laser from the sky. And the strongest does not always win in trials – sometimes it is enough to use intelligence and try to find patterns that serve as the key to solving the problem. From episode to episode, the level of drama builds up to spill over into a bloody finale that opens the doors to the already announced second season.
The central character in “Alice” was played by Sato’s favorite, a 26-year-old actor Kento Yamazaki, remembered by many for the role of L in the television adaptation “Death note“2015 release. In turn Tao Tsuchiya tried on the image of a strong, but at the same time cute girl Yuzuhi Usagi.
Since Shinsuke Sato, prior to his directorial career, staged fights in Tekken 4, the series contains many references to the legendary fighting game. Well, part of the characters of the antagonists seemed to be copied from the neighboring world Mortal kombat…
It should be noted that against the background of the themes of friendship, betrayal and honor, the Japanese rather clumsily introduced the transgender into the history. However, the catwalk model Aya Asahin, depicting an ex-boyfriend, came out too cute and feminine.
The rest is eight-series Alice in borderland offers a lot of violence, brutality, fan service and looks a breeze due to its excellent pace and strong primary source, not counting the small absurdities and sagging towards the end of the season. On the other hand, this is more than normal for modern TV series. And the cliffhanger in the finale promises an equally bright second season, which I personally look forward to.
