Annual exhibition Sxsw added to the list of canceled events in connection with the spread of coronavirus – COVID-19.
Austin city officials announced the cancellation of the SXSW festival, a major technology, music and film conference this year, citing concerns about the spread of a deadly disease.
Based on the recommendation of our public health officer and our director of public health, in order to prevent a local catastrophe in our city, I issued a decree abolishing SXSW, ” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said at a press conference Friday.
Even before the official cancellation, some large companies refused to participate in the exhibition, like Netflix, Mashable, Tiktok and Intel.
SXSW has been held since 1987 and has consistently attracted around 400,000 visitors. According to official statistics, 26% of SXSW visitors come from 105 different countries outside the United States. This year the event was supposed to be held from March 13 to 22.
