A trip to Ukraine – how locations from Call of Duty: Warzone look like in real life

Although authors deny involvement Call of Duty: Warzone to reality and claim that all the events and locations in the game are fictional, fans of the game found the similarity of some buildings from the non-existent city of Verdansk with the sights of eastern Ukraine.

After spending several weeks in Warzone and wrapping more than a dozen laps on the map, the Dexerto website concluded that the key locations of the new Call of Duty and the city of Donetsk are very similar.

Below you can find a selection of comparative photos of game landmarks and structures from real life:

Stadium in Warzone – Donbass Arena

The only difference between the two is that the real arena has an open roof, while the in-game one has a closed roof.

Donbass Arena is a football stadium in Donetsk, built in 2009. Formally, it is the home stadium of Shakhtar football club. It has been closed since 2014 due to the unstable situation in the region, matches at the stadium are no longer held.

Verdan airport and tower – Donetsk airport and tower

The tower in Warzone looks pretty bad and is clearly close to collapse. Which corresponds to its counterpart, destroyed during the battle for the Donetsk airport in 2015.

The only difference between the two towers is that the Warzone version has fewer windows and a height, and also does not have an external staircase.

Bank Verdansk – Bank of Donetsk

The green-colored Warzone Bank building is almost a complete copy of the real one. The difference is only in the windows that are missing on the sides, but through the remaining glass we see similar flights of stairs and passages.

Supermarket “Atlas” – Supermarket Metro

The next building in Donetsk, which is preserved only in the form of a game copy. The real Metro supermarket has long been demolished.

Verdansk Parliament – Parliament of Ukraine

The parliament in Warzone was not borrowed from Donetsk, but was taken directly from the capital. Verdansk building strongly resembles the Ukrainian Parliament. There is a difference, but a similar dome and monumental columns can be noted.

Dam “Mountain” – Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station

The “Gora” dam is strikingly similar to the Dnieper hydroelectric station, which has the largest dam in Ukraine. The developers of Call of Duty made the game version more analogue, which is one of the largest structures in Europe.

Unlike most of the other structures listed, the Dnieper hydroelectric power station is still functioning and open to the general public – there is a highway on its crest, just like on the Gora dam.

Call of Duty: Warzone was released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on March 10, 2023. In Russia, it is officially available exclusively for the last two platforms.
