A super lightweight and quiet laptop that’s perfect for work: HONOR Magic Book 15 Review

Company HONOR introduced notebooks series MagicBook with screens of 14 and 15 inches in February this year, and the next update of the line should be on sale already September 18, 2023… A model has been submitted to GameMAG.ru for testing HONOR Magic Book 15… The new product offers a 7nm Ryzen 5 4500U processor, familiar austere design, faster fast charging, larger SSD and improved cooling system. The declared price in stores should be 59,990 rubles. Now let’s take a closer look at this ultrabook.

PACKAGING AND DELIVERY

The HONOR MagicBook 15 comes in a thick, flesh-colored cardboard box with a plastic handle. The lid folds back and up. Inside are the laptop itself in a packaging film, fixed in a polymer construction, a warranty and instructions. The right section houses the charger and USB Type-C cable, like the iPad Pro 2023. The keyboard is protected by a special protective film.

LOADING

The laptop is started by the power key located in the upper right part of the keyboard, which has the function of automatically entering the profile using a fingerprint. Setting up this mode takes about three minutes – about twenty scans are required. The first boot time is about 15 seconds.

The keys on the keyboard are soft and smooth. The matte touch panel is large enough (120 x 72 mm), recessed into the body with support for gestures and soft pressure. The keyboard is not backlit.

When charging, a light is on on the side of the case, which is good, but not very convenient. The camera built into the keyboard (raised by pressing a button between F6 and F7) is exotic, but it captures the stomach or a chunk of the chin, and to see your face – the laptop must be held at an angle in your hands, which is very strange.

APPEARANCE

The laptop is presented in a classic office style with a brushed aluminum alloy surface that shimmers beautifully in the light azure blue color both on the logo and around the edge. The effect is achieved through surface treatment on an automatic diamond machine. The body itself is made of light alloy and is pleasant to the touch. The lid can be lifted with one hand thanks to the excellent screen hinge. It is rigid and does not flex.

The laptop does not have a separate outlet for the power supply and is charged via USB Type-C. There are also HDMI and USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A outputs on the left. On the right side are USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A and 3.5mm audio jack. The speakers are brought out to the rear panel, but due to a good cooling system and low noise, this does not affect audio reproduction.

In normal mode, the laptop is very quiet – the noise level is below 35db. The device weighs 1.54 kg. The screen-to-body ratio is 87% (the Pro model has 90%). 100% sRGB. The thickness is 1.69 cm, external proportions are 35.7 x 22.9 x 1.69 cm.

WORK AND TESTS

The laptop comes with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery – 41428 mWh according to the passport. One hundred percent charge will be enough when working in standard mode (reading, working in editors, surfing the web) for 5 hours, in games – for an hour.

HONOR MagicBook 15 recharges up to 50% in 30 minutes in sleep mode, to 100% in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The computer itself was produced in July 2023. Inside it is an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor – 2423 MHz, two 8 gigabyte DDR4 memory sticks with a maximum frequency of 2667 MT / s from Hynix, a 512 GB SSSTC CL1-8D512 solid-state disk drive (PCIe NVMe), divided into two sectors, Integrated Realtek 8822CE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC and video adapter based on AMD Radeon (TM) Graphics processor (512 MB). Realtek ALC256 @ AMD K17.6 is used as a sound solution.

Screen – 15.6-inch IPS panel from BOEhydis with a screen resolution of 1080p (1920×1080 @ 60 Hz). The brightness is 250 nits, the display is covered with an anti-reflective coating. However, he can please with the absence of PWM. In the dark, highlights are visible, the black color gives off a little gray.

In standard mode, AIDA64 shows the following temperatures:

  • CPU diode – 39 ° C
  • GPU – 38 ° C
  • SSSTC CL1-8D512 – 31 ° C

The CrystalDisk Info benchmarks indicate an SSD temperature of 44 ° C. The drive speed in Crystal Disk Mark was a record 1650 MB / s for reading and writing 1259 MB / s.

Like most Ultrabooks, the MagicBook 15 isn’t particularly suited for gaming, but we tested it on two tests. Unigine showed at medium settings at 1080p from 8 to 15 FPS – the most problems here are the AMD Radeon memory capacity. Final Fantasy XV Benchmark found the system unsuitable.

At the same time, the MagicBook 15 can run 720p games at medium settings. Built-in acoustics – of an acceptable level – will do for watching YouTube or chatting on Skype. And the fans are so quiet they don’t block the rear speakers.

Magic-link 2.0 technology is convenient for sharing information with your smartphone if you live in the Honor ecosystem. On the lap, the MagicBook 15 lies perfectly, does not get warm and does not cause discomfort. The keyboard is conveniently located.

The MagicBook 15 is a very lightweight, tactile and visually pleasing laptop that’s quiet and perfect for surfing the web, watching videos or working, but has a gaming limit of 720p at medium graphics settings. However, few people buy such a thing for games – more for watching movies and working.
