Filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi passed away on Friday due to lung cancer. He was 82 years old.
Obayashi was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in August 2016. Doctors gave him a maximum of three months. However, the director is nicknamed “Cinema mage” He lived for almost four more years and was reportedly told at the Tokyo International Film Festival in November 2019: “I want to make films another 3,000 years”.
A Hiroshima-native began his 60-year career by shooting commercials, including the Mandom campaign with Charles Bronson. His feature film debut is The 1977 House. Among the most famous works of Obayashi: Exchange Students 1982 and Lonely Heart 1985. The director also directed the adaptation of the manga Kazuo Umezu 1987 Drifting Class and Yasutaki Tsutsui The Girl Who Jumped Through Time 1983as well as anime Shounen Kenya 1984. Obayashi’s latest film is “Maze of cinema”whose premiere was to take place last Friday, but was delayed due to the outbreak COVID-19.
The Japanese government declared Obayashi the winner of the Certificate of Honor in October 2019. The director also received a medal and many medals for merit throughout his life.
