4A Games: Ray tracing on PS5 and Xbox Series is weaker than NVIDIA, but more flexible

PC games have been reaping the benefits of ray tracing for several years now, but with the console space also starting to embrace the technology with the release of Xbox Series X / S and Playstation 5, there is a chance that ray tracing will become much more standardized in the future.

In conversation with the WCCFTech portal, the technical director 4A Games Alexander Shishkovtsov commented on ray tracing in 30 series graphics cards GeForce RTX from NVIDIA and compared it with AMD technology used in next-generation consoles. According to the developer, even though green technologies are in a completely different league from consoles, the approach AMD offers great flexibility, allowing 4A Games to do things on consoles that are not possible on PC

“As for the NV 3000 series, they are not comparable, they are in different leagues in terms of RT performance. AMD’s approach to hybrid ray tracing is inherently different in capabilities, especially for divergent rays. On the other hand, it is more flexible and exists many (probably not yet discovered) methods to adapt it to specific needs, which is always good for consoles and by extension for console players. At 4A Games we already do custom intersections, ray caching and use direct access to BLAS leaf triangles that wouldn’t be possible on a PC. “

In addition, Shishkovtsov believes that in the future, ray tracing will become more widespread in games, and this technology can be used not only for visual enhancement, but also, for example, for sound, AI vision or explosions. 4A Games itself is already working on some of this.

In the same interview, Shishkovtsov commented on concerns regarding Xbox Series S, noting that the console’s weaker GPU could be an issue for future games.
