World of Warships – a simulator of ship battles, which entered the naval triad of the Belarus studio Wargaming.net. The game offers unhurried, thoughtful team fights, four types of ships: destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers, and a typical for the entire cycle pumping system with 10 levels of development and buying equipment for money.
Overview
After the announcement of the game in 2011, many feared that Wargaming adapts the World of Tanks gameplay for new realities, simply replacing tanks with ships. The truth, as it often happens, was somewhere in the middle. World of Warships is really similar to its “ground” brother, especially in terms of the organization of the game process. Team battles for bases, breakdowns of equipment in combat, pumping lines, separation of equipment into classes – basic elements remained unchanged. The fights have changed – they have become more majestic and sweeping.
Stainless steel
Offering players a choice of four classes of warships, the authors simultaneously offered four different gameplay. The most balanced class turned out to be a cruiser. They proved to be fast enough and maneuverable to protect the battleships and aircraft carriers from the raids of the destroyers, and at the same time they received sufficient firepower to participate in the direct felling.
Battleships have enormous combat power and are therefore the main strike force of the fleet. These machines can break the destroyer from one volley (if, of course, they fall) and are capable of absorbing an incredible amount of damage.
Destroyers in the World of Warships play the role of “firefly tanks.” They have a terrible weapon – torpedoes, which in skilled hands turn into an instrument of terror of large ships. These kids have an impressive maneuverability, can put smoke curtains, but at the same time have cardboard armor.
The most ambiguous class is the aircraft carriers. They do not need to go anywhere at all, for they are fighting squadrons of planes. The main screen of the captain of the aircraft carrier is a map with a top view, through which he manages torpedo bombers and bombers. The task of aircraft carriers is to shield their ships and air “trolling” the enemy.
Wisdom of sea battle
The greatest differences between “tanks” and “ships” are manifested when they meet the enemy. To begin with, the very meeting in the World of Warships takes place at a distance of 10 km. Yes, here the projectiles fly to the target for a few seconds and this must be taken into account when aiming. It is necessary to calculate not only the distance, but also to choose the angle of fire, and also take into account the speed and direction of the enemy ship’s movement. Plus, the game offers a choice: to stay at the enemy’s nose and minimize the danger of hitting, but to deprive yourself of most of the firepower, or to stand against the enemy board and arrange a powerful cannonade from all the barrels, while at the same time risking to take a couple of enemy “suitcases” aboard.
Curious looks and mechanics of hits. In the World of Warships there are two types of charges: high-explosive fragmentation and armor-piercing. High explosives are more versatile: they perfectly disable individual mechanisms and are capable of causing fires. Armor piercing is better to use against battleships: in theory they have to flaunt the outer armor and explode inside the hull, but if the armor is too thin, they simply fly right through, without bringing any tangible effect.
The torpedoes stand apart. They are released in one gulp, in the form of a fan, but in view of the limited power reserve the shooter must approach a short distance. In combination with long-range artillery, this generates a large number of tactics. Basically, players try to stay away, but very often in matches there are breakthroughs of destroyers in the enemy’s rear.
Spectacular, slow, wet
If you do not take into account the small flaws (monotonous maps and the understated role of aircraft carriers), then World of Warships can definitely be called the success of Wargaming. Especially after a failure with World of Warplanes. This game does not require players to lightning fast reflexes, but it offers an exquisite marine entourage and grandiose battles with the participation of the largest mechanisms ever built by man.
