According to Miyazaki, the world was created by the efforts of the author of “A Song of Ice and Fire” George Martin, but Martin is not directly involved in the production of Elden Ring. Scientist laid the foundation for the world and prescribed the lore and mythology of the universe, on the basis of which the team was able to create the basis for the future game. The game designer does not exclude that in the future FromSoftware will return to Martin’s universe – the studio sees great potential in the world created by the writer.

At the same time, Miyazaki stressed that, despite the similarities with the Dark Souls series, the novelty will have many differences, the main of which can be considered a central theme. If in Dark Souls everything revolved around kindling a flame, then Elden Ring will offer the idea of world order. Users will have to unravel the rules and laws by which the world and the characters inhabiting it live.

The storytelling in the title will take all the best from both Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice: the story will still be fragmented, users will need to collect scattered pieces of lore, but due to the complexity, part of the plot will be presented in more traditional cutscenes. Miyazaki said that in addition to the main character, there will be many equally significant characters in the story that will influence the understanding of lore. In this case, the player’s actions will affect the development of the story – several different endings are expected.

The multiplayer game will undergo certain changes in comparison with Dark Souls. Interaction with other players will still be built through the phantom summoning system, and the function will not be available in all locations. At the same time, the amount of resources required to summon will decrease, and separate locations will also appear where players can leave special signs and select other users for joint play. Phantoms will still remain only until the boss is defeated – according to Miyazaki, this is not a limitation, but a way to give players a chance to relax and take a break from each other. PvP will also remain in place: players will be able to invade alien worlds and participate in “optional PvP”, but this aspect will become less annoying. The game director added that work on PvP is still ongoing.

The open world, according to Miyazaki, has greatly enriched the gameplay: now tasks can be solved in different ways. As an example, he cited an enemy camp, which can be bypassed, defeated in open battle, or passed unnoticed under cover of night. At the same time, there will be no “question marks” on the global map: all the marks must be placed by the players themselves – this will allow building a unique narrative in each individual case. Elden Ring will offer the main route, but Miyazaki stated that the game does not force it to be completed in a certain way, and users will be able to choose their own path.

Miyazaki also answered the question about the poisonous swamps that appear in every game he plays. The game designer noted with a laugh that he himself did not know how it happened, and suggested that it was some kind of personal injury.

The Elden Ring is slated for release on January 21, 2023. The game will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S. Earlier, during the opening ceremony of the Summer Game Fest, the developers presented a gameplay trailer for the title, and later published 17 screenshots. The official website also reported that swamp locations will return to the game.
