On the site Reddit a great post was published dedicated to the work Bethesda Game Studios, its internal engine Creation Engine and the upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield…
Informant writing under the name OdahP and citing his own sources, provided a whole wave of new details about the interior kitchen Bethesda, revealing a number of interesting facts. At the same time, he immediately asked to treat his words as a rumor – despite the fact that he was convinced of the reliability of his words, he was not able to verify absolutely all statements on his own. Respected insiders drew attention to the publication, after which it was picked up by some media outlets.
Below we have outlined the main points from the publication about Starfield and Creation Engine…
- Bethesda’s tech team has really focused on fundamental changes to the Creation Engine. To improve the instrumentation, a separate team of technical engineers, consisting of five people, was formed inside the studio. At the same time, freelance specialists also help in working on the engine.
- The rewritten engine will significantly raise the overall visual level of the following Bethesda Game Studios games. In particular, we are talking about increased drawing range, volumetric light, reflections and other elements.
- The Creation Engine can now display materials and surfaces differently. A kind of multilayer system is used that allows you to easily create and modify existing assets.
- Bethesda artists began to rely heavily on photogrammetry technology. The studio began experimenting with it back in Fallout 76, but Starfield uses it much more actively to create assets.
- In the new version of the Creation Engine, the shadow rendering algorithms have been rewritten – now the GPU is responsible for them, and the shadows have become much more beautiful and detailed.
- Lighting algorithms have also undergone major changes, now the Enlighten technology is responsible for the light, which is why the picture added in realism, achieved through the natural interaction of light sources with the game environment.
- Ray tracing technologies are unlikely to appear in Starfield. Nevertheless, the insider notes, the engine supports ray tracing, so you should not completely exclude the possibility of their presence in the game.
- The new version of the Creation Engine will feature a completely redesigned animation system. We are talking about fundamental changes – animation of movements, facial animation, animation of fabrics and much more. Bethesda Game Studios’ animators recently switched to the Autodesk Maya toolkit and are now working using the software.
- Character customization has also been improved. Potentially, this can not only expand the settings of the in-game appearance editor, but also endow the NPC with a large number of unique faces.
- Now the Creation Engine can calculate physics without reference to the frame rate – there should now be no bugs related to the incorrect behavior of objects with a frame rate higher than 60. At the same time, physics is still counted through the Havok engine.
- The Creation Engine has improved procedural content generation algorithms.
- The streaming of assets in the new engine has also been greatly improved. Because of Starfield gameplay involves fast travel in spaceshipsBethesda has rewritten the content loading algorithms in the Creation Engine taking into account the features of the SSD, which, together with the increased draw distance, will help to achieve impressive landscapes.
- Now the Creation Engine can store more unique NPCs in memory in a single scene (we are talking about hundreds of characters). The Radiant AI system has also been improved.
- Bethesda has been able to implement a new voice modifier system that is used to create more unique voices without the need for countless actors.
- At the heart of the Creation Engine remains a deep modular system – Bethesda puts even more emphasis on support for custom modifications. In turn, Microsoft experts provide adequate support so that mods can be supported on consoles.
