Will Backward Compatibility Expand on PS5? Sony Patent Discovered to Add Trophies to Legacy Games via Emulation

backward compatibility Xbox Series X / S offers more options than Playstation 5ranging from support for games from all four generations to a much wider range of features such as FPS Boost and Auto HDR… However, a new patent found online suggests that Sony is also thinking about developing its backward compatibility.

On March 18th, a Japanese company patent was published describing a method for adding trophies to games through emulation… The document relates to the system and method of awarding prizes in previously released projects without modifying their source code.

“Trophies tend to be an important part of modern games. However, often older titles do not offer this. In order to enhance the gaming experience, it would be desirable for users to receive trophies in earlier games that did not have such a function,” patent.

In other words, the patent will allow retroactively adding trophy systems to older games via software emulation, thus bypassing the need to create a direct port

Given that PS5 backward compatibility currently only supports PlayStation 4 games, the vast majority of which already have trophies, it is possible that Sony is exploring the possibility of introducing a patent into PS Now or even expanding the backward compatibility library with games from PS1, PS2 and PS3. However, keep in mind that patents do not always materialize into something real. In fact, more often than not, it’s just a way for companies to protect their ideas and technologies.
