A popular series of children’s books about the adventures of Dr. Doolittle has been filmed for many years, but usually it turned into a real disaster. The director made a new attempt Steven geiganknown for tapes “Traffic”And“Siriana”As well as a video game Call of Duty: Ghosts – the one where there was a smart dog Riley and worked out artificial intelligence in fish.
Unlike films with Eddie Murphy and Kayla Pratt, the plot of the picture “Dr. Dolittle’s Amazing Journey”Is more canonical. A nice introduction tells the story of a brilliant doctor who can talk with animals and lives in Victorian England. The Queen gave him a huge estate, which Doolittle turned into a reserve with a house for himself and his young wife.
But happiness was short-lived – the ship on which the second half of the doctor sailed drowns in the sea, and he closes the doors of his estate from grief and does not accept anyone else.
This part of the plot is made in the form of an atmospheric hand-drawn cartoon and looks really cool.
Next, the action is already filmed on camera and is transferred seven years ahead, where Dolittle meets his future student Tommy Stubbins and Lady Rose. The latter brings the sad news that the queen is sick, and if she dies, the Doolittle estate will go back to the state. To save the monarch and the reserve, the hero has to go in search of a mythical fruit that can cure any ailment.
With all the richness of the scenery (which is what the doctor’s all kinds of mechanisms are worth, like a whale cart and playing chess with mice), Geigan does not seem to understand for whom he is making the film.
On the one hand, the story is deliberately childish with primitive jokes, an obvious plot, kind, but by and large useless characters and a weak second protagonist (Tommy), who is just happy to travel with Doolittle and smile silly at the camera.
On the other hand, there are some really funny moments with the squirrel and the treatment of constipation, touching episodes with Lily Dolittle, epic scenes with huge animals, painted by Antonio Banderas, who sleeps with a flock of lions, and rather harsh episodes of reprisals against villains.
The film could well please adults (there’s even a joke about the size of that one), but the problem is the lack of sharp turns: the authors do not try to create an intrigue, the villains are too cardboard, the final confrontation turned out to be crumpled and even the Queen of England does not cause any positive emotions, but rather the opposite.
The final impression is a little brightened up by the new song of Siya in the credits, after which there is a small crypt scene.
“Dr. Dolittle’s Amazing Journey”- a rather average movie with beautiful scenery, cute little animals and sometimes good jokes, which suffers from a primitive plot, cardboard villains and a weak ending. The film seems to be shot for children, but some scenes are clearly not created for them, and adults in the session are likely to just get bored.
