What Unreal Engine 5 is capable of in the right hands: Gears 5 developers showed a technodemo for Xbox Series X

Studio The coalition demonstratedwhat is capable of Unreal Engine 5 from Epic Games in skillful hands. Developers Gears 5 presented a technical demo of ultra-realistic character rendering using the engine’s key technologies – Lumen and Nanite.

In the first video, you can see the advanced technology of lighting and reflection in real time, and in the second – a male character, traced with extreme detail: the human body consists of 130 thousand polygons, 31 thousand of which went only to the face. Hair, beard and eyebrows have eaten away another 3.5 million triangles.

According to Coalition CTO Colin Pente, the character’s eyelashes contain the same amount of polygons as was previously spent on a full character model on the Xbox 360.

Lumen and Nanite from Unreal Engine 5 were first unveiled in May 2023 as part of a PlayStation 5 game engine demo. The current tech demo, called Alpha Point, was shown at GDC 2023. This time, the demo ran on Xbox Series X.

Currently, The Coalition is creating a new IP game for the Xbox Series X | S along with the sequel Gears of War.
