Head of game direction Microsoft Phil Spencer was an opponent of the idea Xbox Series X unveiled at The Game Awards 2019 in December 2019. He believed that this event was not very suitable for such announcements, but one of the heads of the marketing department was able to convince him. However, the move was very risky in any case, and the announcement could end in disaster, says Microsoft’s top manager, because usually there are a lot of new games at ceremonies, against which other news can get lost.
The Microsoft team tried to make the console’s promo video spectacular and showed a bright trailer right after it Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II from Ninja theory. The reaction from the gamers was very warm.
“It turned out great, and we received excellent reviews. But I will not dissemble, I think that the announcement could turn into a complete disaster. When making such decisions, you have no idea how everything will turn out.”
