Recently was fully presented new horror The medium from the Polish team Bloober teamknown for his work on games such as Layers of fear and Observer. One of the most striking features of the project, no doubt, for many has already become music Akira Yamaoka, which is listed as one of the authors of the soundtrack of The Medium. Polish developers told in a short interview about how this alliance was concluded.
The most famous Yamaoka gained work on the cult series Silent hill. Within its framework, the musician created absolutely unique moods, combining heavy industrial rock, melancholy melodies and a whole library of frightening sounds accompanying characters on every segment of their difficult path.
“We literally grew up on Silent Hill. Therefore, when negotiations began with Akira Yamaoka, I was very worried,” says Wojciech Peyko.
For Wojciech Peiko, senior designer for The Medium, Akira’s influence on the genre as a whole was as strong as for many of us.
“We first met after the Tokyo Game Show. Akira-san was alone, without his agent, and I immediately realized that the upcoming evening was going to be extremely entertaining. At that moment, we had not finished Blair Witch and were working on two games at once. We proposed he should look at The Medium, and then, of course, they asked if he wanted to write music for us.
First, Akira put on his headphones and got acquainted with the gameplay of The Medium. And I just sat next to me and sweating, hoping that he would be satisfied. After some time, Akira finished, turned to us and said: “You mentioned two games. I don’t mind working on both“For me it was a real triumph, I literally shouted“ Yes, yes, yes! ”, Continues Peiko.
But ultimately, the partnership was only concluded on The Medium, and last week the Bloober Team was finally able to announce the good news publicly. Moreover, in the debut trailer of the project just you can hear an excerpt from one of the compositions of Yamaoka.
At the same time, the joy of working together with an industry legend is sincerely shared by other Bloober Team employees, including the president of the company Tomash Gavlikovsky.
“We have created an exciting story, and with our project, Akira Yamaoka really goes back to the horror genre. We all incredibly love the Silent Hill series, even the perspective of The Medium camera is largely inspired by these games. Everything turns out just fine. We are incredibly glad that we managed to work together. According to the Bloober Team, cooperation with Akira Yamaoka was quite close, the musician visited the studio three times and each time he personally got acquainted with the current build of the game.
“Sometimes Yamaoka was not at all opposed to temporarily turning into frenzied fans who ran to him with a request to sign copies of games, vinyl records and other merchandise,” Wojciech Peyko finished the interview jokingly.
