The changes will affect not only the name and logo. The uniforms of football players, commentators’ texts, signs, attire and chants of fans, stadium decorations, team presentation and all other aspects will change. All changes will be made by free update.
From the very beginning, in 1932, Washington Redskins performed under the name Bravesbut a year later received its famous name. It was probably chosen in honor of the trainer William “Lone Star” Dietz, a Sioux Indian.
And to create a logo with the profile of the Native American leader, the leadership was advised by a fan of the team, Black-legged Native American Walter Blackie Wetzel, then president of the National Congress of American Indians.
In the 1980s, protests and boycotts of the club began, but the leadership assured that it would never change its name and logo. However, in 2014, the US Patent Office revoked the registration for the Washington Redskins trademark and the court upheld the name change requirement.
In all polls, at least 80% of Americans said the name “Washington Redskins” had nothing to do with racism or demean the image of Native Americans. But all legal ways to challenge a court decision have been exhausted, and the Redskins will soon sink into oblivion.
