Valve’s “Killer” Nintendo Switch Is Really In Development – Media

May 25th in beta client files Steam found a mention of a device called SteamPal, presumably a portable console.

Edition Ars Technic confirmed through their sources that Valve is really developing a portable gaming PC

  • According to journalists, the device will run on Linux and will be able to run a large number of PC games, and the release, if there are no problems in the supply chain, could take place by the end of 2023.
  • The device is a touchscreen all-in-one with gamepad controls, similar in appearance and functionality to the Nintendo Switch, only without the detachable Joy-Con.
  • The console supports connecting to TVs and monitors via the USB Type-C port, but it is not yet clear if this will require a docking station.
  • An Intel or AMD chip is likely to be used as the hardware base, but it’s not clear yet if Valve is going to offer multiple configurations with different capacities.
  • One version of the SteamPal prototype is noticeably wider than the Switch and in addition to the standard set of buttons, triggers, and a pair of sticks contains at least one thumb-sized touchpad.
  • The console is at the prototype stage, so it may still undergo changes, or be canceled altogether, given Valve’s love for the closure of their projects.
  • This device is likely hinted at by Valve CEO Gabe Newell earlier this month, saying that the release of Steam games on consoles should be cleared up by the end of the year.

Against the background of the publication of Ars Technic, users noticed that two weeks ago on Reddit a post was published in which a user claimed that Valve is working on their handheld console and will release it in the fourth quarter of this year

According to the redditor, the device will be equipped with a custom APU from AMD, a 7 or 8 inch display and will be able to play the entire Steam library. The company allegedly focuses on the price tag 399 dollars

In addition, a few more lines were found in the code of the latest Steam update, potentially related to the Valve handheld console. They indicate that the device can receive trecade, rear grip buttons and tactile feedback in the manner of Switch / DualSense
