Valve announced the termination of support for the virtual reality platform Steamvr on macOS devices. It seems that this was done for reasons of expediency, because the total number of VR-headsets for PC is 4 million units, while on “apple” systems it is only a few percent of the total.
SteamVR appeared on macOS back in 2017, and then the company was confident of success. But now, after three years, distribution has been minimal, and user interest is low.
Valve said the team plans to focus on platform improvements for Windows and Linux. For those who need virtual entertainment specifically on macOS, it is proposed to use the legacy SteamVR legacy builds. They can be found in the beta section of the application.
In general, the situation with VR so far remains rather complicated on all platforms. This is due to the high price of iron and a small number of content. Although, it seems, Valve believes in the prospects of this direction.
