“Used the gained experience to create the Steam Deck”: Valve drew conclusions after the failure of Steam Machines

When creating a portable gaming computer Steam Deck company Valve drew on experience from designing failed desktop systems Steam Machines, and did everything to prevent the repetition of old mistakes. About this in an interview with the publication IGN told the designer Valve Greg Coomer

“Our developers have learned a lesson – the story of Steam Machines helped us thoroughly prepare before entering the iron market again. We decided not to disclose the Steam Deck to the public until we felt that we were definitely ready and took into account all possible nuances of the system. make this progress without the Steam Machines story, “said the designer.

Valve recalled that computers from the Steam Machines line ran on the Linux operating system, which then supported far fewer games than now.

“The games supported weren’t enough to keep users interested, and low interest from the potential public discouraged developers from optimizing their games for Linux.”

All this made Valve start creating technology. Protonwhich allows games developed for Windows to run on Linux. The company claims that already at the start of the Steam Deck will support all games from the digital Steam store

It was also revealed that Valve experimented with portable formats back in the days of the creation of the Steam Controller and Steam Link.

Very early versions of the Steam controller had a small screen in the middle. The idea was to make it programmable. At some stage, the developers even thought about introducing Steam Link hardware into the gamepad.

The Steam Deck will debut in December 2023. Valve hopes to sell “millions of systems”
