Last year a french company Dontnod entertainment introduced its latest development, namely an adventure project Tell me whyperformed in the spirit of episodic dramas Life is strange. One of the distinguishing features of the new game is the fact that one of the central characters, Tyler Ronan, is a transgender. In fact, this is the first AAA project (or just a project from a major publisher) with a protagonist with an atypical gender. Recently portal Vg247 was able to chat with August Black, the actor who gave the voice to Tyler, as well as the development manager and chief narrative director of Tell Me Why, who spoke more about their work and what distinguishes it from other products on the market.
Tell Me Why tells the story of the twins Tyler and Alison, who, years later, return to their home to figure out their difficult past.
“Given the central plot theme and the form of the story we want to tell, the very foundation of our story resonated with the fact that Tyler is a trans-man. We understand the risks that we take when creating such a hero. And at the same time, we bear responsibility to make it as authentic and naturalistic as possible. We have nothing to be shy about, we are confident in the strength of our script, “explains Florent Guillaume, Tell Me Why Development Manager.
Often, various minorities are generalized in fiction, the authors do not pay due attention to the unique experience of such characters, preferring to tell the most “general” and accessible plots. However, Dontnod takes a different approach.
“Our team understands perfectly well that we are not able to properly reflect the lives of absolutely all transgender people. Instead, we just focus on the life of one such person, on the life of Tyler Ronan, and we want to believe that people will find his story touching,” Guillaume continues.
Moreover, For maximum authenticity, the French team chose the real trans-man, actor August Black, to play the role of voicing Tyler, who through his personal experience and experiences will try to endow the protagonist with the necessary character traits.
“The game tells about very important things. The narrative on behalf of a transgender person is not something that most players are used to, but now we have a chance to reach a wide audience. I am very glad that people can get to know our heroes. Tyler has something for you to offer, and his transgender is only part of his personality.He is a very interesting, flexible character.The scriptwriters really tried to create such a multifaceted image.It’s great, of course, to have a character in the game that reminds you in appearance. But much more important then he is also similar in spirit to you and that many transgender children will be able to establish such a relationship with him that no one else will offer them, “concluded August Black.
